THE SILENCE OF THE PENTHOUSE / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 — The Woman Everyone Believed

The room froze.

Not because no one knew what had happened.

But because everyone had already decided.

I could feel the weight of their judgment before a single word was spoken. The marble beneath my bare feet felt colder than ice, and the sound of my own heartbeat seemed impossibly loud inside the enormous penthouse.

My name was Clara Bennett.

For six years, I had worked in this house.

Six years of polishing the silverware that cost more than my yearly salary. Six years of preparing meals for people who never learned my favorite color, never asked about my family, never remembered that I existed unless something went wrong.

And tonight…

Something had gone terribly wrong.

The woman lying motionless on the marble floor was Eleanor Whitmore.

My employer's wife.

A woman admired by magazines, praised at charity events, and photographed beside presidents and celebrities. To the outside world, Eleanor was elegance itself.

But inside these walls, she was simply a woman who had been silently drowning.

And I was the only person who knew.

"Clara."

My master's voice pulled me back.

Damian Whitmore.

A man whose name controlled corporations, real estate empires, and political influence across the city.

A man who had never needed to raise his voice to make people afraid.

Until tonight.

"You were standing behind her."

His words were quiet now.

That was worse.

Anger was predictable.

Calm was dangerous.

"I didn't push her," I whispered.

My voice sounded weak even to me.

The mistress, Vanessa, stood at the top of the stairs.

Damian's personal assistant.

The woman everyone believed was just a loyal employee.

The woman who had spent the last two years slowly becoming part of his life.

Her black velvet dress hugged her figure perfectly. Not a single strand of hair was out of place.

Not after witnessing a woman fall down twenty-three marble steps.

Not after screaming an accusation.

Not after watching someone's life disappear.

"Damian," Vanessa said softly, tears finally appearing in her eyes. "I saw everything."

I looked at her.

And something inside me went cold.

Because I knew.

I knew those tears were fake.

Vanessa had planned this.

But the problem was…

I had no proof.

Only the truth.

And the truth meant nothing when the most powerful man in the city had already chosen his enemy.

Damian stepped closer.

"You expect me to believe you over her?"

His finger pointed toward Eleanor.

My eyes moved toward the woman on the floor.

The woman who had once whispered to me:

"If anything happens to me, don't trust the people who cry the loudest."

At the time, I thought she was being paranoid.

Now…

I wondered if she had been warning me.

"Call the police," Damian ordered.

Vanessa smiled for half a second.

A tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

And that was when I understood something terrifying.

She wasn't afraid of the police.

She wanted them here.

Because whatever happened next…

Had already been prepared.
