THE SILENCE OF THE PENTHOUSE / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 — The Secret Behind Eleanor’s Smile

The recording ended.

But Eleanor’s voice remained.

It stayed inside the penthouse like a ghost.

Nobody moved.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to speak because whoever broke the silence would have to acknowledge what everyone was thinking.

This was not an accident.

Detective Adrian Cole looked down at the phone again.

"Who had access to Mrs. Whitmore's device?"

Damian answered quickly.

"My wife."

The detective raised his eyes.

"Only her?"

A pause.

"No."

That single word changed everything.

The powerful billionaire who had spent the last thirty minutes looking at me like I was a criminal suddenly looked uncertain.

Because for the first time, the possibility entered his mind.

Maybe the person standing beside him was not the victim.

Maybe she was the reason there was a victim.

Vanessa noticed his expression.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not panic.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Because she realized Damian was no longer completely on her side.

"Damian," Vanessa whispered, stepping closer. "You can't seriously believe that I would hurt Eleanor."

Her voice was gentle.

Perfect.

The same voice she used during charity events.

The same voice she used when cameras were around.

But I had spent six years watching people.

I knew the difference between kindness and performance.

Damian looked at her.

"I didn't say that."

"No."

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"But you thought it."

The detective interrupted.

"Everyone will have a chance to explain themselves. Separately."

Vanessa looked annoyed.

"Separately?"

"Yes."

She laughed softly.

"Detective, do you know who you're speaking to?"

Cole didn't blink.

"I know exactly who I'm speaking to."

That answer seemed to irritate her.

People like Vanessa were used to doors opening before they touched the handle.

They were used to people lowering their voices around them.

They were not used to being questioned.

Especially not by someone who wasn't impressed.

Two hours later, I sat alone in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where I had prepared thousands of meals.

The same place where Eleanor would sometimes sit after midnight, barefoot, drinking tea while pretending everything was fine.

Everyone thought she had a perfect life.

A billionaire husband.

A beautiful home.

A name people recognized.

But perfection was often just a beautiful cage.

I remembered the first time Eleanor spoke honestly to me.

It was three months earlier.

She had been standing by the window, looking down at the city.

"Do you ever feel," she asked, "like everyone loves the version of you they created?"

I didn't know how to answer.

So I stayed quiet.

She smiled.

"That's the most dangerous kind of loneliness."

At the time, I thought she was talking about society.

Now I wondered if she was talking about her own home.

A shadow appeared near the doorway.

I looked up.

Damian.

For the first time in six years, he looked human.

Not the billionaire.

Not the man whose name appeared on magazine covers.

Just a husband standing in a kitchen where his wife might have died.

"Clara."

I stood immediately.

"Sir."

He looked uncomfortable hearing the formal word.

"Did Eleanor ever tell you she was afraid of someone?"

I hesitated.

This was dangerous.

Anything I said could be used against me.

But then I remembered Eleanor's voice.

"If anything happens to me..."

"Yes."

Damian's expression changed.

"Who?"

I looked directly at him.

"She never said a name."

"You're lying."

The accusation hurt.

But I understood.

He had spent years trusting his instincts.

And his instincts had failed him tonight.

"She said something else."

"What?"

I swallowed.

"She said the person closest to her was the person she should fear the most."

Damian became completely still.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A phone vibrating.

Both of us turned.

On the counter was Vanessa's abandoned handbag.

The police had not searched it yet.

The phone inside continued ringing.

Damian walked toward it.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

"Eleanor."

My blood turned cold.

Damian stared at the screen.

Because everyone knew one thing.

Eleanor was lying unconscious in the hospital.

She could not be calling anyone.

Slowly...

Damian picked up the phone.

And answered.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"Damian..."

His face lost all color.

Because he recognized the voice immediately.

It was Eleanor.

And she was crying.

May you like

"Don't trust Vanessa."

The call ended.
