Chapter 9 - The Empty Garden Room

Victor became terrifyingly calm.
He did not shout.
Did not break anything.
He simply turned toward every security officer in the hallway.
âFind my son.â
The estate gates locked.
Dogs searched the grounds.
Police arrived within minutes.
Lily stood in the garden room staring at Ethanâs abandoned stuffed fox.
âHe was right here.â
Victor looked at the unconscious guard.
âWhat happened?â
Paramedics found a puncture mark in the guardâs neck.
Sedative.
Professional delivery.
Monroe studied the camera system.
âOne hallway feed went dark for ninety seconds.â
Victorâs face hardened.
âInside help.â
Nobody else could have crossed the estate unseen.
Monroe ordered every staff member contained.
Phones surrendered.
Vehicles checked.
Then Lily saw something beneath Ethanâs chair.
A folded paper crane.
She picked it up.
Inside was writing.
BRING THE ASTER RECORDS TO THE OLD BOATHOUSE.
MIDNIGHT.
NO POLICE.
Victor grabbed the note.
âNo.â
Monroe looked at him.
âShe wants something you donât have yet.â
âThe records under the angel.â
âYes.â
Lily suddenly understood.
âSerena doesnât know where they are.â
Monroe nodded.
âShe took Ethan to force you to retrieve them.â
Victor looked toward the cemetery visible through the west windows.
âWe get the records.â
âAnd then?â
âWe give her whatever she wants.â
Monroe stepped closer.
âNo.â
Victorâs eyes turned cold.
âThat is my son.â
âAnd Serena knows it.â
âShe will use that.â
Victor did not care.
Lily did.
âShe wants you desperate.â
Victor looked at her.
Lily continued.
âAmelia hid those records because they matter.â
âIf you hand over the only proof, Serena can destroy it.â
Victorâs jaw tightened.
âIâm not gambling with Ethan.â
âNeither am I.â
Lily stepped closer.
âBut if we walk in scared and unprepared, she gets both.â
Victor stared at her.
For a moment, class disappeared.
Employer.
Maid.
Millionaire.
Staff.
They were simply two people who loved the same child.
Monroe broke the silence.
âWe retrieve the evidence.â
âWe copy everything.â
âWe control the exchange.â
Victor nodded reluctantly.
They reached the cemetery at sunset.
The stone angel stood above Ameliaâs family plot.
Lily found a loose base stone.
Behind it was a waterproof case.
Inside sat three encrypted drives.
A ledger.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed Serena.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
Charles Mercer.

And someone Victor never expected.
His own younger brother, Julian Hale.
