Chapter 6 - Charles Mercer

Mercer refused to speak at the station.
Not until Victor entered the interview room.
Then he laughed.
âYou look like your father.â
Victor sat across from him.
âYou worked for him too.â
âTwenty-two years.â
âThen you betrayed him.â
Mercer leaned back.
âI survived him.â
Victor placed Ameliaâs notebook on the table.
âTwo hundred fifty thousand dollars.â
Mercerâs smile vanished.
âDecember fourteenth.â
âWhat did Serena pay you to do?â
Silence.
Victor leaned forward.
âMy wife died two days later.â
Mercer looked at the camera in the corner.
âI want immunity.â
Detective Monroe spoke from behind the glass.
âNo promises.â
Victor waited.
Mercer finally cracked.
âI disabled the garage cameras.â
Victorâs jaw tightened.
âWhy?â
âSerena said she was meeting someone.â
âWho?â
âI donât know.â
âYou expect me to believe that?â
Mercer shrugged.
âShe paid cash.â
âWhat else?â
Mercer looked uncomfortable.
âShe asked for Ameliaâs vehicle service records.â
Victor stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.
âYou knew.â
âNo.â
âYou knew something was going to happen.â
âI knew enough not to ask.â
Victor wanted to hit him.
Instead, he sat again.
âWho cut the brake line?â
Mercer shook his head.
âNot me.â
âWho?â
âI never saw them.â
âBut after the crash, Serena called me.â
âWhat did she say?â
Mercer stared at the table.
âShe told me to erase the archived security backup.â
Victor felt sick.
âDid you?â
âYes.â
âEverything?â
Mercer looked up.
âNo.â
Victor froze.
âI kept one copy.â
âWhy?â
âInsurance.â
âWhere is it?â
Mercer smiled faintly.
âI knew someday somebody would need it.â
Monroe entered the room.
âWhere?â
Mercer looked at her.
âI hid it somewhere Serena could never get without Victor.â
âWhere?â
âThe Hale family mausoleum.â
Victorâs blood went cold.
His father and grandparents were buried there.
Amelia too.
Mercer gave them instructions.
A sealed compartment behind Victor Hale Sr.âs plaque.
Before they left, Mercer called after Victor.
âThereâs something else.â
Victor turned.
âSerena didnât start this.â
âWhat?â
âShe inherited it.â
âFrom whom?â
Mercerâs face changed.
âAsk your father why he created the trust in the first place.â
Victor stared at him.
âMy father died six years ago.â
May you like
Mercer nodded.
âExactly.â
