Chapter 1 - The Gold Key

For three seconds, nobody moved.
The emergency lights painted the marble hallway in a weak red glow.
Victor Hale stood beside his trembling son while Lily stared at the empty place where Serena had been only moments earlier.
âWhere did she go?â
Victorâs voice was low.
Dangerously low.
Lily tightened both arms around Ethan.
The little boy was only four, but even he understood that something terrible had happened.
âShe was right there,â Lily whispered.
âI saw her when the lights went out.â
Victor turned toward the security guards rushing into the hall.
âSeal every gate.â
âSirââ
âNow.â
Two guards ran.
Victor knelt beside Ethan.
âAre you hurt?â
Ethan shook his head.
Then his lower lip trembled.
âShe pulled me.â
Victor closed his eyes for one second.
When he opened them, whatever hesitation he had once felt toward Serena was gone.
Lily still held her phone.
The recording remained paused.
Victor looked at it.
âPlay the rest.â
Lily swallowed.
âI donât have the rest.â
Victor looked up.
âWhat?â
âThe power cut interrupted the upload.â
She touched the screen.
âThe file stopped here.â
Serenaâs voice played again.
âVictorâs child must disappear before the trust activatesâŠâ
Static followed.
Then silence.
Victorâs face drained.
âWhat trust?â
Lily shook her head.
âI donât know.â
Then Ethan pointed toward the floor.
âDaddy.â
Victor followed his finger.
The gold key lay beside the staircase.
Small.
Old-fashioned.
A black enamel H was embedded in the bow.
Victor picked it up.
His expression changed immediately.
Lily noticed.
âYou recognize it.â
Victor stared at the key.
âYes.â
âWhere does it go?â
He looked toward the dark east wing.
âThere is a room at the end of the second-floor corridor.â
Lily knew the room.
Everyone who worked in Hale Mansion knew it.
The door had remained locked for almost five years.
No staff member was permitted inside.
Even cleaning stopped at the threshold.
The room had belonged to Victorâs late wife, Amelia.
Ethanâs mother.
Victor had ordered it sealed after her death.
Lilyâs skin prickled.
âWhy would Serena have that key?â
Victor did not answer.
He lifted Ethan into his arms.
âStay with me.â
They climbed the staircase together.
At the end of the east corridor stood a dark walnut door.
Victor inserted the gold key.
His hand stopped.
âThis key disappeared the week Amelia died.â
Lily looked at him.
âWho had it last?â
Victorâs jaw tightened.
âMy mother.â
He turned the key.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
A stale breath of air moved into the hall.
Inside, everything looked untouched.
A cream coat remained draped across a chair.
A silver hairbrush rested on the vanity.
A framed photograph showed Amelia holding baby Ethan.
Victor stepped inside like a man entering a grave.
Then Lily noticed the wall behind the bed.
One section of wallpaper was torn.
Behind it was a steel panel.
A keypad had been installed inside the wall.
May you like
And beneath the keypad someone had scratched four words into the metal.
VICTOR, SHE LIED TO YOU.
