Chapter 11 - The Wrong Heir

Jonathan Hale smiled as though they were speaking at a family dinner.
Victor could barely contain his rage.
âLet Ethan go.â
Jonathan crouched beside the boy.
Ethan recoiled.
âI spent my whole life hearing that everything belonged to you.â
Victor said nothing.
Jonathan continued.
âMy father was older.â
âHe helped build the company.â
âBut Grandfather chose you.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Julian stole from him.â
Jonathanâs expression hardened.
âThatâs what you were told.â
Lily watched from behind the monitor.
Monroe was recording everything.
Jonathan continued.
âMy father discovered Project Aster.â
âHe wanted control so he could profit from it.â
Victorâs face tightened.
Jonathan laughed.
âAt least he understood power.â
âThen Amelia started asking questions.â
Serena stepped closer to the camera.
âThat became inconvenient.â
Victor stared at her.
âYou killed Amelia.â
Serena smiled faintly.
âI didnât touch her car.â
âWho did?â
Jonathan answered.
âMy father arranged it.â
Victor felt the room tilt.
Julian.
His own brother had ordered Ameliaâs death.
Serena continued.
âJulian panicked afterward.â
âHe thought Amelia had left evidence.â
âHe wanted Ethan removed too.â
Victorâs fists tightened.
âWhat stopped him?â
Serena looked at Ethan.
âMe.â
For one second, nobody expected that answer.
Victor stared.
âYou?â
âYour son was useful alive.â
âThe trust made him valuable.â
âShe had protected Ethan not out of mercy, but because his existence kept a pathway open.
Jonathan stepped into frame again.
âWhen my father died, Serena promised me what should have belonged to our side of the family.â
Victor looked at him.
âAnd kidnapping a four-year-old seemed reasonable?â
Jonathanâs eyes turned cold.
âYou think you are innocent because you never saw what your company did.â
âThat doesnât make you innocent.â
The accusation landed.
Victor knew it.
Years of travel.
Delegation.
Trust.
Blindness.
He had allowed other people to operate in his name.
The call was ending.
Serena gave final instructions.
âMidnight.â
âNo police.â
âBring all three drives.â
âIf we see one squad car, Ethan goes somewhere you will never find.â
The screen went black.
Monroe looked at Victor.
âWe have twenty-three minutes.â
Victor grabbed the case.
âIâm going.â
Lily blocked the doorway.
âNot alone.â
Victor stared at her.
âShe said alone.â
âShe also said no one would believe a maid.â
May you like
Lilyâs expression hardened.
âShe has been wrong about me before.â
