Chapter 5 - THE LETTER INSIDE THE PIANO
Ethan allowed Victoria to leave the envelope with security.
He did not let her enter.
The letter carried his mother’s handwriting.
It was addressed to Rosa Martinez.
Ethan opened it inside the library with Rosa present.
Dear Rosa,
Ethan does not know that I found the photograph from your university fundraiser.
I recognized the way he looked at you.
It was the same way his father once looked at me before ambition made everything complicated.
If you are reading this, perhaps my son has finally learned that silence is not control.
The letter was dated four years earlier.
Ethan stared at Rosa.
“My mother knew about you.”
“I met her once.”
“When?”
“After you stopped calling.”
Rosa explained that Evelyn Caldwell visited Columbia to sponsor a laboratory program.
She recognized Rosa from a photograph Ethan had kept inside a book.
Evelyn asked about their relationship.
Rosa denied that anything remained between them.
She did not reveal the pregnancy because she had only discovered it two days earlier.
The letter continued.
There is a second envelope inside the piano.
It belongs to Ethan.
Only someone who knows the opening melody can find it.
Ethan went to the parlor.
The room remained sealed as part of the investigation.
Detective Shaw allowed him to enter with Rosa.
Lily stayed at the cottage with a nurse.
Ethan sat at the piano.
His hands hovered over the keys.
He had not played since his mother’s funeral.
He pressed the first three notes of her morning melody.
A small panel beneath the music stand clicked open.
Inside was another letter and a velvet box.
The box contained a silver key.
Ethan opened the letter.

The Caldwell family trusts were designed to preserve wealth.
They were not designed to preserve kindness.
If you ever have a child, the controlling shares of the Evelyn Caldwell Foundation pass directly to that child.
Your spouse receives no authority over them.
Do not change this.
I have seen what people become when they believe marriage gives them ownership of another person’s inheritance.
Ethan read the final paragraph twice.
Victoria’s father had been negotiating a merger between his real-estate company and the Caldwell Foundation.
After the wedding, Victoria expected to gain influence through Ethan.
If Lily was legally recognized, millions in voting shares would move beyond Victoria’s reach.
Rosa looked at the first envelope.
“How did Victoria know where to search?”
“She did not find this by accident.”
Detective Shaw examined the piano panel.
Fresh scratches surrounded it.
Someone had tried to force it open before Lily entered the room.
Lily had not gone to the piano only because she heard music.
The keys had produced a faint sound when Victoria attempted to open the compartment.
