Chapter 10 - THE VAULT OF OLD SECRETS

A section of the auditorium wall moved inward.
Behind it stood a steel door.
Charles stared at Lily.
“How did she know?”
Ethan looked at his daughter.
“She listens.”
The child had remembered the melody from the parlor.
She had also heard Ethan play it while opening the piano compartment.
Charles pulled Lily toward the vault.
Rosa fought against the ropes.
“Do not touch her.”
He inserted the silver key.
The steel door opened.
Inside were document cases, film reels, and a sealed wooden box.
There were no bearer certificates.
Charles searched every shelf.
“Where are the shares?”
Ethan looked at an inscription on the wall.
WEALTH WITHOUT ACCOUNTABILITY BECOMES A WEAPON.
“My mother never hid shares here.”
“She hid evidence.”
The files documented decades of illegal financial activity involving Caldwell relatives.
Charles’s name appeared on multiple transactions.
He had diverted charitable funds into private developments.
Haynes Development helped conceal the transfers.
Victoria looked at him.
“My father is in these files.”
“Yes,” Charles said.
“Which means we need to destroy them.”
He removed a lighter.
Rosa finally freed one wrist against the sharp edge of the chair.
She pushed Lily behind her.
Ethan stepped toward Charles.
“If you burn that archive, copies still exist.”
“You are bluffing.”
“My mother trusted no single room.”
Charles looked uncertain.
Victoria moved behind him.
She struck his gun hand with a metal file box.
The weapon fell.
Ethan rushed forward.
Charles hit him across the face.
Rosa pulled Lily toward the exit.
Victoria grabbed the gun.
Everyone froze.
She pointed it toward Charles.
“You used me.”
Charles laughed.
“You used Ethan.”
“You wanted the house, the foundation, and the name.”
“You do not get to become innocent now.”
Victoria’s hand shook.
“No.”
“But I am not taking your charges too.”
Police entered through the outer corridor.
Detective Shaw ordered Victoria to lower the weapon.
For one moment, Victoria looked at Ethan.
She seemed to understand that no version of this night ended with him returning to her.
She placed the gun on the floor.
Charles reached for the lighter again.
Lily threw Button the rabbit.
The toy struck his hand.
The lighter fell into a puddle from the damaged sprinkler system.
Detective Shaw restrained him.
Ethan knelt beside Lily.
She touched the bruise forming on his cheek.
“Did the bad man push you too?”
“Yes.”
“Marble hurts.”
He held her carefully.
“I know.”
Rosa stood behind them.
The vault evidence would destroy Charles and implicate Victoria’s father.
But one file carried Rosa’s name.
Ethan opened it.
It contained records from Columbia University.
Someone had paid the school to cancel Rosa’s scholarship four years earlier.

The authorization came from Caldwell headquarters.
Ethan’s signature appeared at the bottom.
