The Caldwell archive restoration uncovered one final item.
A film reel recorded by Evelyn shortly before her death.
Ethan invited Rosa and Lily to watch it in the parlor.
Evelyn appeared seated at the grand piano.
Her illness was visible.
Her voice remained strong.
“If Ethan has opened this recording, something has gone wrong.”
Lily sat on the rug holding Button.
Evelyn continued.
“Our family has spent generations deciding who belongs by examining names, schools, clothing, and bank accounts.”
“We have been wrong repeatedly.”
“The piano taught me something money never did.”
“A person belongs in music when they are willing to listen.”
“A person belongs in a family for much the same reason.”
Evelyn played the three-note melody.
Then she added two notes.
The exact notes Lily had added during her park visit with Ethan.
Lily’s eyes widened.
“She fixed it like me.”
Rosa smiled.
“Maybe you fixed it like her.”
The recording continued.
“If my son ever has a child, do not make the child earn a place in this house.”
“Change the house instead.”
Ethan looked around the parlor.
The rug beneath the piano.
The crayons on a side table.
Button resting against a chair leg.
The house had changed.

After the recording ended, Lily climbed onto the bench.
She played the melody.
Ethan joined her.
Rosa watched from the doorway.
