Chapter 12 - THE WEDDING DRESS IN THE CLOSET
Victoria returned to her parents’ home under court supervision.
She faced assault, conspiracy, unlawful entry, and participation in the kidnapping plan.
Her cooperation against Charles reduced the immediate charges.
It did not erase the shove.
Her wedding dress remained inside Ethan’s mansion.
It had been delivered the week before.
Ethan found the garment bag hanging inside a guest closet.
He did not open it.
He asked staff to return every item belonging to Victoria.
The house manager discovered another hidden envelope inside the dress bag.
It contained a prenuptial amendment.
Ethan’s signature appeared at the bottom.
Like Rosa’s scholarship form, it had been hidden among other documents.
The amendment gave Victoria temporary authority over Caldwell Foundation decisions if Ethan became mentally or physically incapable.
A physician’s statement was attached.
It described Ethan as suffering from stress-related judgment problems.
The physician worked for Haynes Development.
Victoria and Charles had planned for more than marriage.
If Ethan resisted the merger, they would remove him.
The wedding had been the doorway.
Lily’s existence threatened the plan because the child’s succession rights would override Victoria’s authority.
Ethan gave the documents to Detective Shaw.
Then he issued a public statement.
He acknowledged Lily as his daughter.
He acknowledged Rosa as her mother.
He denied any attempt to remove Lily from Rosa’s custody.
He also admitted signing documents without proper review.
“I allowed wealth and trust in my family name to replace attention,” he said.
“That failure harmed Rosa Martinez long before the public learned her name.”
Rosa watched the statement from the hotel.
She did not call him.
Instead, she contacted Columbia University.
The new dean reviewed the scholarship records.
The school offered to reinstate her status with full financial support.
Rosa hesitated.
She had been away for four years.
Her academic confidence had disappeared beneath cleaning schedules and childcare.
Lily sat beside her coloring a piano.
“You know science?” Lily asked.
“I used to.”
“Did you forget?”
“Some of it.”
“You can learn it again.”
Rosa smiled.
Children often made courage sound simple.
She accepted a meeting with the department.
