Rosa returned to Columbia full-time.
Her first semester nearly broke her.
She studied after Lily slept.
She worked weekends at a research center.
She sometimes stared at equations that once felt familiar and wondered whether Charles had taken too much time from her.
Then she remembered Lily’s question.

Ethan offered foundation funding.
She declined direct support.
He arranged an open competitive grant instead.
Her team applied.
Independent reviewers selected the project.
When Rosa learned the result, she called him.
“You made sure the process was blind?”
“Yes.”
“You did not speak to the reviewers?”
“No.”
“Did you want to?”
“Desperately.”
She laughed.
It was the first easy laugh they shared in years.
Their relationship changed slowly.
Not into the romance they once had.
Not yet.
It became cooperation.
Respect.
Occasional disagreement without disappearance.
Ethan attended Lily’s school performances.
Rosa attended foundation meetings involving children’s programs.
They learned to speak before resentment became silence.
One rainy evening, Ethan drove Rosa and Lily home after the trains stopped running.
Lily fell asleep in the back seat.
Rosa watched the city lights.
“Why did you never marry before Victoria?”
“I thought commitment would weaken my control.”
“And then?”
“Victoria made control feel like partnership.”
“Until it did not.”
Ethan looked toward her.
“Why did you never tell Lily more about me?”
“I did not want to make you into a villain.”
“You could have.”
“I was angry.”
“But anger is not the whole truth.”
He nodded.
They sat in silence.
