Chapter 8 – The Hidden Truth

Elena stared at the folder in Detective Sarah Collins's hands.
Her heart pounded.
"I don't understand," she said. "The report says Daniel is the father."
"He is," Sarah replied. "That part is true."
"Then what secret could possibly be bigger than that?"
Sarah sat beside the hospital bed and carefully opened the file.
"The DNA report wasn't the only document we recovered."
She removed several financial records.
Bank transfers.
Corporate agreements.
A life insurance policy.
Each one carried Daniel Whitmore's signature.
Richard Whitmore stepped quietly into the room, his face tense.
Sarah looked at him.
"I think it's time."
Richard nodded.
"She deserves to know."
Eight months earlier...
Richard had suffered a severe heart attack during a business trip to London.
Although he survived, doctors gave him devastating news.
His heart condition was irreversible.
He secretly updated his will.
The Whitmore fortune—worth nearly four billion dollars—would bypass Daniel entirely.
Instead, it would be placed in a family trust.
The first biological grandchild born after Richard's death would inherit controlling interest in Whitmore Group.
The child's legal guardian would oversee the company until adulthood.
Richard had never announced the change.
Only three people knew.
Richard.
His attorney.
Daniel.
Elena felt the room spinning.
"So..."
Sarah finished the sentence.
"If your daughter was born alive, Daniel would never control the company."
Richard lowered his head.
"I hoped becoming a father would change him."
"It did."
His voice broke.
"It made him desperate."
Margaret closed her eyes in disbelief.
"So they tried to kill a baby... for money."
Sarah nodded slowly.
"Not only the baby."
She pointed toward another document.
"If Elena died before giving birth..."
"...Daniel remained next in line to inherit everything."
Silence filled the room.
No one spoke.
No one could.
Across town, Daniel sat in the county jail reviewing the evidence with his attorney.
Charles Benton looked exhausted.
"I can't defend this."
Daniel slammed his fist against the metal table.
"You have to."
"The prosecution now has motive, video evidence, financial records, and two surviving witnesses."
Daniel's face hardened.
"There has to be something."
Charles hesitated.
"There is one possibility."
Daniel looked up.
"If Elena refuses to testify..."
Daniel slowly smiled.
"She won't."
That evening, two correctional officers escorted Daniel back to his cell.
As the heavy steel door closed behind him, another inmate quietly approached the bars.
"You Whitmore?"
Daniel looked up cautiously.
"What do you want?"
The inmate slid a tiny folded piece of paper through the opening beneath the door.
"No charge."
Daniel unfolded it.
Only one sentence was written inside.
She won't live long enough to testify.
Daniel's smile vanished.
He stared at the message.
Someone outside the prison...
...was planning to finish what he had started.
At that same moment, in the maternity ward, Elena stood by her hospital window watching the sunset.
She never noticed the figure in a dark hoodie standing across the street.
The stranger slowly raised a camera with a powerful telephoto lens.
One photograph.
Then another.
Finally, the stranger spoke quietly into a phone.
"I've confirmed her room."
A cold voice answered.
May you like
"Good."
"Tonight... we don't fail."
