Chapter 14 – Justice

The courtroom was silent as Thomas Keller took the witness stand.
He raised his right hand, swore to tell the truth, and settled into the wooden chair.
Daniel Whitmore never took his eyes off him.
Neither did Eleanor.
The prosecutor approached.
"Mr. Keller, how long did you work for the Whitmore family?"
"Eighteen years."
"Were you employed on the night of August 14?"
"Yes."
"What did you see?"
Thomas took a slow breath.
"I was pruning the rooftop garden after the charity reception."
"You were on the roof?"
"I was hidden behind a row of hedges. They didn't know I was there."
The courtroom grew even quieter.
"I saw Mrs. Whitmore shove Elena toward the edge."
A murmur spread through the gallery.
"I saw Elena catch the rope."
"I saw Margaret grab her wrist."
His voice trembled.
"And I saw Daniel pull out a knife."
The prosecutor asked one final question.
"What happened next?"
Thomas looked directly at the jury.
"He cut the rope."
"There was no accident."
"There was no suicide."
"It was murder... that failed."
The defense attorney stood for cross-examination.
"Mr. Keller, why did you wait months to come forward?"
Thomas lowered his head.
"Because I was afraid."
"You accepted money."
"Yes."
"You disappeared."
"Yes."
"So why should anyone believe you now?"
Thomas reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
"I brought something."
The judge nodded.
"You may approach."
Inside the envelope were several old photographs.
Thomas placed one on the evidence screen.
It showed the rooftop garden.
The date stamp matched the night of the attack.
Another photograph appeared.
Daniel standing near the rope.
Then another.
Eleanor only steps away from Elena.
"I took these because the flowers had just been replanted," Thomas explained. "I was documenting my work."
The final image froze the courtroom.
It captured Daniel holding the knife.
The blade reflected the rooftop lights.
Although the actual cutting wasn't visible, the timeline matched the video recovered from Margaret's phone perfectly.
The evidence fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
After six weeks of testimony, closing arguments concluded.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
Everyone stood as the foreperson returned.
"On Count One, attempted first-degree murder..."
"Guilty."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"On Count Two, conspiracy to commit murder..."
"Guilty."
Eleanor began to cry.
"On all remaining counts..."
"Guilty."
The courtroom erupted.
Elena covered her face as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Margaret wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Richard quietly bowed his head.
The judge waited for silence.
"Daniel Whitmore, you are sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."
Gasps echoed through the room.
"Eleanor Whitmore..."
"You are sentenced to thirty-five years in federal prison."
The gavel struck.
"Court is adjourned."
As deputies led Daniel away in handcuffs, he turned one final time toward Elena.
He expected anger.
Hatred.
Instead, she simply held her stomach, smiled gently, and whispered,
"You lost."
Two days later, Elena went into labor.
And before the sun rose...
A healthy baby girl entered the world.
But when Richard arrived at the hospital to meet his granddaughter, the doctor met him outside the delivery room with an unexpected expression.
"Mr. Whitmore..."
"We need to talk about your granddaughter's blood test."
Richard's heart sank.
"What happened?"
May you like
The doctor hesitated.
"It revealed something... none of us expected."
