ok Chapter 12 – The Meeting at Union Station

Sarah Collins slammed the car door and sped toward Union Station with Marcus close behind.

Her mind raced.

Richard Whitmore?

The man who had helped rescue Elena, turned over evidence, and personally asked federal authorities to find Eleanor?

None of it made sense.

Either Richard had been deceiving everyone...

...or there was another explanation.

"We don't move until we know why they're meeting," Sarah told the surveillance team over the radio.

"No arrests unless someone's in immediate danger."

Union Station buzzed with the sounds of early commuters.

Business travelers hurried toward the platforms while announcements echoed through the vast marble hall.

Richard Whitmore stood beside a quiet corner café, his hands resting on a cane.

Across the room, Victoria Langford approached carrying a black leather briefcase.

Neither of them smiled.

"You came," Richard said.

"I almost didn't."

Victoria placed the briefcase on the table.

"I suppose you've figured it out."

"I figured out enough."

"You should have listened to me years ago."

Richard sighed.

"I know."

From a nearby table, Sarah watched through a hidden camera disguised as a coffee cup.

Marcus whispered, "They're exchanging something."

"Hold."

Richard slowly opened the briefcase.

Inside were dozens of original documents.

Birth certificates.

Stock certificates.

Medical records.

And a sealed envelope marked:

CONFIDENTIAL — TO BE OPENED ONLY IF DANIEL COMMITS A FELONY.

Richard stared at it in disbelief.

"You actually kept it."

"I hoped I'd never have to use it," Victoria replied.

Richard broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

It was dated twenty-five years earlier.

He recognized the handwriting instantly.

It belonged to his late wife, Catherine.

As he silently read the letter, the color drained from his face.

His hands began to tremble.

Victoria spoke softly.

"She wanted you to know the truth."

Richard looked up, tears filling his eyes.

"I've lived twenty-five years believing a lie."

Sarah couldn't hear every word, but one sentence reached her microphone clearly.

Victoria leaned forward.

"Daniel was never your biological son."

Marcus looked at Sarah.

"Did she just say what I think she said?"

Sarah nodded slowly.

"Oh, my God."

Richard closed his eyes.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Daniel's cruelty.

His violent temper.

His complete lack of remorse.

The DNA disputes Richard had dismissed decades earlier.

His wife's mysterious insistence that the subject never be discussed again.

Victoria continued carefully.

"Catherine had an affair during a brief separation."

"When she discovered she was pregnant, she confessed everything."

Richard's voice barely emerged.

"And I chose to forgive her."

"Yes."

"But she never told Daniel."

Richard lowered his head.

"He never knew."

Victoria nodded.

"She wanted him raised as your son."

Sarah quietly signaled the surveillance team.

"No arrest."

Marcus looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because this isn't a conspiracy."

She watched Richard wipe away a tear.

"It's a family secret."

"And right now..."

"...it's giving us the motive we were missing."

Suddenly, Richard stood.

"I'm taking these documents directly to the district attorney."

Victoria handed him the briefcase.

"You should."

Then she looked around the station.

"I think your detective friends have been listening."

Sarah realized she had been spotted.

Before officers could react, Victoria smiled faintly.

"I've spent thirty years protecting this family."

She turned toward Sarah.

"My job is finally over."

But as Victoria walked toward the station exit...

A loud gunshot echoed across the terminal.

Glass shattered.

Victoria staggered.

A dark stain spread across her white blouse.

Panic erupted as commuters screamed and scattered.

Sarah drew her weapon and shouted,

"Officer down! Find the shooter!"

Victoria collapsed into Richard's arms.

With her final breath, she whispered,

May you like

"They're... not finished..."

"...protect... Elena..."
