Chapter 7 – The Airport Trap

The rain had just begun when Eleanor Whitmore's black Mercedes pulled beneath the private terminal at Ashford Executive Airport.

She wore oversized sunglasses, a beige trench coat, and a silk scarf wrapped tightly around her hair. To anyone passing by, she looked like another wealthy traveler leaving for a European vacation.

Inside her designer handbag were three passports, nearly two million dollars in bearer bonds, and a one-way ticket to Switzerland.

Her private jet was fueled and waiting.

She smiled for the first time since Daniel's arrest.

"By tomorrow, they'll never find me."

Two miles away, Detective Sarah Collins's phone vibrated.

The caller ID read: Richard Whitmore.

"I know where she's going," he said without greeting.

Sarah immediately signaled Marcus Reed.

"Private airport?"

"Yes."

"How certain are you?"

"One hundred percent."

Richard paused before adding, "Eleanor has used the same pilot for nearly fifteen years."

Sarah didn't waste another second.

"Dispatch, notify airport police. Lock down every runway. No aircraft leaves until we arrive."

At the terminal, Eleanor handed her passport to the concierge.

"Good evening, Mrs.—"

The woman stopped herself.

The face on television.

She recognized it instantly.

Before she could react, Eleanor smiled.

"Everything all right?"

"Yes... of course."

But the concierge quietly pressed the silent security alarm beneath the counter.

Outside, Captain James Holloway, the pilot, noticed flashing lights approaching the airport entrance.

Three.

No.

Six police vehicles.

His expression changed.

He reached for his radio.

"Mrs. Whitmore..."

Eleanor looked up.

"What is it?"

"We have company."

She turned toward the glass wall overlooking the runway.

Police cruisers sped through the gates from opposite directions.

Behind them came black SUVs.

Airport security.

State police.

Federal marshals.

The terminal had become a trap.

"Move!" Eleanor shouted.

She abandoned her suitcase and sprinted toward the aircraft.

Her expensive heels clicked wildly across the wet pavement.

The jet's stairs were still lowered.

Just a few more yards.

She could make it.

"Federal Marshals!" a voice thundered.

"Stop where you are!"

She kept running.

A marshal fired a Taser.

The probes struck her back.

Eleanor screamed as electricity surged through her body.

She collapsed onto the rain-soaked concrete only twenty feet from the aircraft.

Handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

For the first time in thirty years...

Eleanor Whitmore had no one left to command.

The following morning, every newspaper in the country carried the same front-page photograph.

Mother and son.

Both in handcuffs.

Both charged with attempted murder.

Public opinion shifted overnight.

Former friends distanced themselves.

Corporate partners suspended contracts.

The Whitmore Group's stock price plunged by nearly forty percent before noon.

At the hospital, Elena quietly watched the news with Margaret.

Neither woman celebrated.

Neither smiled.

Margaret simply whispered,

"This isn't the end."

Elena nodded.

"No."

She rested a hand over her baby.

"They're finally being arrested."

She looked at the television one last time.

"But now we have to prove why they wanted my daughter dead."

At that exact moment, Detective Sarah Collins walked into the room carrying a thin manila folder.

"I think," she said gravely, "we've just found the answer."

Inside the folder was a DNA report dated eight months earlier.

The name of the father was listed as Daniel Whitmore.

But the report also contained a second page—one that had been deliberately hidden.

Sarah looked directly at Elena.

May you like

"Your baby wasn't the secret they were trying to hide."

"They were protecting a much bigger one."
