Chapter 3 – A Story No One Wanted to Hear

The ambulance doors slammed shut as paramedics rushed Elena and Margaret toward St. Vincent Medical Center.
Elena clutched her stomach the entire ride.
"Please," she whispered repeatedly. "Tell me my baby is still alive."
A paramedic placed a fetal monitor against her abdomen.
For several agonizing seconds, only static filled the ambulance.
Then—
Thump... thump... thump...
A tiny heartbeat echoed through the compartment.
Strong.
Steady.
Elena burst into tears.
Margaret reached over from the neighboring stretcher and squeezed her hand.
"I told you," she whispered weakly. "That little girl is a fighter."
At the Whitmore estate, Daniel was already preparing for the next phase.
His attorney, Charles Benton, arrived within twenty minutes.
"I've spoken to the police," Charles said.
"And?"
"They believe your wife suffered an emotional breakdown."
Daniel poured himself a glass of whiskey without the slightest hint of guilt.
"What about the maid?"
Charles hesitated.
"She's a problem."
Daniel looked up.
"Explain."
"She survived."
Silence filled the room.
"She can testify."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Then no one will believe her."
Meanwhile, Detectives Sarah Collins and Marcus Reed arrived at the hospital.
Years of homicide investigations had taught Sarah one simple rule:
People who jumped rarely had bruises on their wrists.
Elena had both wrists badly bruised.
There were rope burns across her palms.
Deep scratches covered her forearms.
Marcus studied the photographs.
"Looks like she was hanging on."
Sarah nodded.
"And someone cut whatever she was holding."
They entered Elena's hospital room.
She looked exhausted but alert.
"I'm Detective Collins," Sarah said gently.
"Can you tell us what happened?"
Elena took a long breath.
"My mother-in-law pushed me."
Marcus exchanged a quick glance with Sarah.
"And my husband..." Elena continued, her voice shaking. "He cut the rope."
Neither detective interrupted.
When she finished, Marcus quietly asked,
"Do you have any proof?"
Elena closed her eyes.
"No."
Sarah wasn't convinced.
Victims rarely fabricated details this specific.
Before leaving, she looked once more at the rope burns.
Something didn't fit Daniel Whitmore's carefully crafted story.
Across the hallway, Margaret lay sleeping after receiving stitches to her head.
A nurse quietly entered to check her IV.
As she adjusted the blanket, something heavy slipped from Margaret's apron pocket onto the floor.
It was a cellphone.
The screen was cracked but still powered on.
The nurse picked it up, intending to place it on the bedside table.
Just then, a notification lit the screen.
Video Recording Saved Successfully.
The nurse frowned.
Curious, she tapped the thumbnail.
The shaky footage began playing.
A rooftop.
A terrified scream.
Then a crystal-clear voice.
"That baby can't live."
The nurse's eyes widened.
The camera continued recording as a knife flashed beneath the rooftop lights.
The rope snapped.
The recording ended.
Shocked, the nurse immediately looked toward the hallway.
Outside Margaret's room, a man wearing a hospital maintenance uniform had been watching through the glass.
The moment their eyes met, he turned and walked away.
The nurse didn't know his name.
May you like
But hidden beneath the maintenance cap was Daniel Whitmore's personal bodyguard, sent for one purpose—
To erase that phone before anyone else saw what it contained.
