Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO WANTED MY NAME

Vivian had not planned to remain a mistress.
She planned to become my legal decision-maker.
As guardian, she could control my medical care, approve financial actions, and restrict visitors.
Graham could divorce me while claiming concern.
Afterward, Vivian could help him manage the twins’ inheritance.
The arrangement was so bold that it almost looked legitimate on paper.
That was their specialty.
They did not steal with masks.
They stole with affidavits.
Dr. Marcus Lane operated a private psychiatric practice outside Boston.
He provided evaluations in divorce and guardianship disputes.
Investigators found that Graham’s firm had referred more than forty clients to him.
In twenty-eight cases, Lane declared one spouse incapable of managing money.
Graham represented the other spouse in nineteen of those cases.
Vivian later served as records consultant or guardian in eleven.
Several victims lost homes, businesses, or custody.
The pattern extended far beyond my family.
One woman, Danielle Foster, had spent three years trying to prove she was not mentally ill.
Her husband gained control of her restaurant chain after Lane declared her delusional.
Another man, Peter Walsh, lost his construction company while recovering from surgery.
His wife was represented by Graham.
Elias had been building those cases under federal protection.
“Our family brought me into the investigation,” he explained.
“But you were never the only target.”
Graham used family law as a marketplace.
He found vulnerable spouses.
Vivian manufactured records.
Lane created medical authority.
Corrupt clerks moved petitions quickly.
Then assets disappeared through consulting fees.
My mother discovered the trust withdrawals because Graham had begun using the same network against us.
She became dangerous.
Elias became dangerous after her.
Now I had become dangerous by filing for divorce.
Claire opened the draft guardianship order.
It contained a handwritten note scanned accidentally into the file.
KEEP LENA SEDATED UNTIL DELIVERY.
TRANSFER INFANTS AFTER BIRTH.
I stared at the words.
“Transfer them where?”
No one answered immediately.
Elias looked toward Detective Bennett.
She placed photographs on the table.
Federal agents had searched a house in Concord rented by Vivian.
Inside were two cribs.
Newborn clothing.
Formula.
Medical equipment.

And forged birth certificates.
The mother’s name on both certificates was Vivian Cole.
