Chapter 13 - VIVIAN’S OFFER

Vivian requested a meeting with prosecutors.

She offered information about the ORIGIN file in exchange for protection.

Detective Bennett allowed me to watch from an adjoining room.

Vivian wore a jail uniform.

Her blonde hair had grown uneven.

Without the red coat and courtroom confidence, she looked ordinary.

That made her more frightening.

Cruelty rarely requires a dramatic face.

“I did not plan the push,” she said.

The prosecutor placed her message on the table.

PREGNANT WOMEN FALL ALL THE TIME.

Vivian looked away.

“I wanted the hearing delayed.”

“You drugged her.”

“Graham handled the water.”

“You attempted to sedate her in the hospital.”

“I followed instructions.”

“You arrived with infant carriers.”

Vivian began crying.

“I thought the children would be safer with me.”

“Why?”

“Because Graham said Lena was unstable.”

The prosecutor laughed once.

“You forged the report calling her unstable.”

Vivian’s tears stopped.

She understood the performance had failed.

She admitted joining the scheme after working in hospital records.

Her aunt Susan introduced her to Dr. Lane.

Lane paid for altered charts and convenient diagnoses.

Robert Hale found legal cases.

Graham built petitions around the false medical evidence.

The network’s founder was Judge Malcolm Whitaker.

Graham’s father.

I had met Malcolm only twice.

Graham claimed they were estranged.

Malcolm had supposedly died ten years earlier.

Vivian said he was alive.

He lived under another identity in Vermont.

Judge Whitaker had spent decades handling probate and family cases.

He learned how easily a medical phrase could transfer property.

After retirement, he turned the process into a business.

Graham inherited the clients and expanded the fraud.

“Where is the ORIGIN file?” the prosecutor asked.

“With Malcolm.”

“Address?”

Vivian gave them a mountain property near Stowe.

Then she looked toward the observation glass.

She could not see me.

She knew I was there.

“Lena, Graham never loved me.”

“He used me.”

I stepped into the room.

“You helped him erase my brother.”

“You tried to take my children.”

“Whether he loved you is the least important truth here.”

Her face tightened.

“Your brother knew more than he told you.”

Elias entered behind me.

Vivian smiled faintly.

May you like

“He made a deal with Malcolm six years ago.”

Elias went still.
