Chapter 5 - THE WATER BOTTLE

The courthouse security cameras showed Graham giving me the bottle at 8:36 a.m.

I drank from it while waiting outside the courtroom.

Within twenty minutes, my legs felt heavy.

I blamed pregnancy and lack of sleep.

The bottle had been discarded in a recycling bin.

A courthouse custodian recovered it after Detective Bennett ordered the area sealed.

Laboratory testing found the same sedative in the remaining water.

The drug could cause dizziness, slowed reactions, and poor balance.

Vivian did not merely push me.

Graham weakened me first.

The plan was designed to look like an unfortunate fall.

Vivian would touch my back lightly.

I would lose balance.

Witnesses would remember a pregnant woman stumbling.

Instead, Elias opened the courthouse doors at the exact moment I fell.

His arrival had not been accidental.

He was scheduled to file a federal motion concerning the Whitaker financial network in a courtroom upstairs.

When he saw Graham on the public calendar, he went to observe the divorce hearing.

He did not know I would be there until he saw me near the stairs.

“You were coming to court against my husband?”

“Yes.”

“Were you going to tell me you were alive?”

“After the arrests.”

I looked away.

“You decided for me again.”

“I know.”

The answer stopped my anger from becoming an argument.

Elias did not defend the choice.

He simply accepted that it had hurt me.

My divorce attorney, Claire Holloway, arrived with a laptop.

She had received the emergency freeze.

The judge signed it after reviewing the courthouse video, toxicology evidence, and messages from Vivian’s phone.

Every Monroe Trust account was locked.

Graham could not transfer another dollar.

The judge also granted a temporary protective order.

Graham and Vivian were prohibited from contacting me.

Graham’s access to the marital home was suspended.

He could not make medical decisions for me or the twins.

Claire sat beside my bed.

“There is something else.”

“Graham filed a separate petition this morning.”

“He asked the court to declare you mentally incompetent.”

The petition included an affidavit from Dr. Marcus Lane.

I had never met him.

He claimed I suffered from prenatal psychosis, paranoia, and delusions about financial theft.

The report was dated one week earlier.

Graham had prepared to call my accusations insanity.

Then Claire showed me the attached emergency contact.

If I were declared incompetent, my court-appointed guardian would be Vivian Cole.
