Chapter 7 - THE MAN OUTSIDE THE WINDOW
The backup battery activated thirty seconds later.
Emergency lights illuminated the hallway.
Evelyn moved Noah into the reinforced safe room installed by the court.
She locked the door from inside.
Security officers approached the vehicle near the fence.
The driver accelerated toward them.
The SUV struck the gate and became trapped against the stone wall.
Police removed a man from behind the wheel.
He was Grant Pierce’s brother.
Inside the vehicle were gasoline containers, rope, and a photograph of Noah’s new house.
Sebastian had ordered the attack from jail through an attorney’s investigator.
The goal was not only to kill Noah.
It was to frighten him into surrendering the trust.
The investigator had also paid an online journalist to publish the address.
The article described the property as a mansion purchased for Evelyn with Whitmore money.
Photographs made the accessible home appear luxurious.
Strangers began sending threats.
Some accused Evelyn of exploiting a disabled child.
Others demanded money.
Noah read one comment before Katherine blocked his internet access temporarily.

He became silent.
At dinner, he pushed away his food.
“You should leave.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Why?”
“They think you only want money.”
“Do you think that?”
“No.”
“Then we will deal with everyone else carefully.”
“I ruin people’s lives.”
“No.”
“People make choices around your money.”
“That does not make the choices yours.”
Noah looked toward the floor.
“Victoria said Dad died because he was trying to protect me.”
“Your father died because Sebastian sabotaged his plane.”
“You did not touch the aircraft.”
“You were six.”
Noah’s voice broke.
“If I did not exist, nobody would fight over the trust.”
Evelyn pulled a chair beside him.
“If you did not exist, they would have found something else to take.”
“Greed does not begin inside the person being stolen from.”
The sentence stayed with him.
The court ordered stronger protection.
Katherine recommended moving Noah to a confidential location.
He refused.
“I am tired of disappearing.”
Evelyn supported him.
Safety would be strengthened without turning the house into another prison.
The power outage attack produced another discovery.
The investigator’s phone contained messages from Charles.
Although Charles remained in custody, he had continued directing family loyalists.
One message referred to Noah as damaged inventory.
Another instructed the investigator to locate Evelyn’s adult daughter, Grace.
Evelyn had not spoken about Grace at the mansion.
Grace lived in Chicago and worked as a public defender.
She received an envelope at her office the following morning.
Inside was a photograph of Evelyn entering the burning house.
