Chapter 5 - THE CRASH THAT CREATED THE HEIR
Daniel Whitmore’s plane went down six years earlier over Pennsylvania.
The official report blamed ice accumulation and pilot error.
Daniel died.
The pilot died.
Noah survived because his seat remained attached to part of the fuselage.
His spinal injury came from the impact.
Charles used his influence to close the investigation quickly.
He said the family needed privacy.
Sebastian’s maintenance company repaired the aircraft two days before the flight.
Company records showed a mechanic had reported a problem with the deicing system.
The report disappeared.
The mechanic was fired.
He moved to Arizona.
Detective Ortiz found him.
His name was Lewis Grant.
He remembered Sebastian entering the hangar after midnight.
The next morning, the deicing system passed inspection despite not being repaired.
Lewis believed someone replaced his report with a false document.
He tried to contact Daniel.
Daniel’s assistant told him the aircraft had already departed.
After the crash, Charles paid Lewis a settlement in exchange for silence.
Lewis accepted because his daughter needed surgery.
For six years, guilt followed him.
He agreed to testify.
The black case contained Daniel’s final voicemail.
He had recorded it aboard the plane shortly before the systems failed.
“Evelyn, I know this message will sound strange.”
“If something happens to me, protect Noah from my father and brother.”
“I discovered Sebastian’s contracts.”
“Charles knows.”
“Victoria is helping them access the trust.”
“The plane is shaking.”
“The pilot says the deicing system is not responding.”
The recording ended beneath the sound of alarms.
Evelyn had never received the message.
It had been stored inside the case.
Daniel had planned to give it to her after returning.
He trusted the housekeeper more than his own father because Evelyn once stopped Charles from firing a nurse who reported Noah’s early breathing problem.
She had risked her job for a newborn child.
Daniel remembered.
Charles did too.
That was why he spent years dismissing Evelyn as uneducated and replaceable.
He feared the one person his son had trusted.
The investigation became a murder case.
Sebastian denied sabotaging the aircraft.
He blamed a maintenance employee.
Victoria offered to testify against him.
Her attorney claimed she had been abused and controlled by the Whitmore family.
Evelyn listened to the proposed agreement with disgust.
Victoria had drugged Noah.
Locked him inside a burning room.
Watched him scream.
Whatever fear Sebastian created did not move her hands.
The prosecutor refused full immunity.
Victoria still agreed to speak.
She admitted Charles and Sebastian knew about Daniel’s new will.
They planned to delay the transfer until Noah turned twenty-five.
When Daniel threatened to expose company theft, Sebastian arranged the maintenance failure.
Charles covered it up.
Victoria married Daniel only eighteen months before the crash.
She had signed a prenuptial agreement that gave her nothing if Daniel died.
Charles promised her a luxury trust if she remained loyal.
She stayed.
She helped raise Noah publicly.
Privately, she resented the disabled child who kept her dependent on Charles’s payments.
“What was the purpose of the mansion fire?” Ortiz asked.
Victoria looked down.
“Sebastian believed Daniel kept original evidence inside Noah’s room.”
“Why lock Noah in?”
“He knew where the box was.”
“That does not answer the question.”
Victoria’s voice became almost inaudible.
“Because he would have told you.”
“And because his thirteenth birthday made the trust transfer public.”
