Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER CALLED FOR HELP
Police obtained the mansion’s emergency-call records.
The first alarm came from a kitchen employee.
Victoria never called emergency services.
Sebastian never called.
Charles’s phone remained in his pocket for the entire evacuation.
The security director claimed he believed someone else had reported the fire.
Then investigators recovered footage from a camera near the rear staircase.
It showed Victoria entering Noah’s room twenty minutes before the fire.
She carried a silver tray.
Sebastian followed five minutes later with a black duffel bag.
When he left, the bag appeared fuller.
Victoria exited last.
She closed the bedroom door.
Then she wrapped the chain around the handles.
The camera did not show the padlock clearly.
It did not need to.
The chain remained loose until Victoria’s hands moved near it.
Afterward, it stayed tight.
The footage also showed Charles standing at the end of the hallway.
He saw everything.
He walked away.
Detective Ortiz arrested Victoria and Sebastian at the hospital.
Charles was questioned but released pending further investigation.
He returned to a hotel surrounded by attorneys.
Television reporters gathered outside.
The Whitmore family released a statement.
It described the fire as a tragic accident complicated by a distressed child’s unreliable memories.
Evelyn read the statement from her hospital bed.
“They are calling him a liar.”
Ortiz nodded.
“They need people to doubt him before he speaks.”
Noah woke later that afternoon.
His first question was about Evelyn.
She entered his room wearing a hospital gown and bandages.
“You look terrible,” he whispered.
“So do you.”
He almost smiled.
Then his face became serious.
“Did the box burn?”
“No.”
“Did they find Dad’s recording?”
“Yes.”
Noah closed his eyes.
“Victoria knew I had it.”
“How?”
“She searched my desk last week.”
“I moved it under the floor.”
“She said if I kept secrets, bad things would happen to everyone.”
Evelyn sat beside him.
“What happened before the fire?”
Noah described Victoria bringing him warm milk.
He refused at first.
She told him it contained medicine for muscle pain.
After drinking, his arms became heavy.
Sebastian entered and demanded the black case.
Noah said he did not know where it was.
Sebastian struck him.
Then they moved his wheelchair away.
Victoria ripped out the emergency button.
“She looked at me before closing the door.”
“What did she say?”
Noah’s voice shook.
“She said Daniel should have died alone.”
Evelyn took his hand.
“You are not protecting them anymore.”
Noah looked frightened.
“Grandpa says family problems stay inside the family.”
“Your family left you inside a fire.”
“That rule ended when the door locked.”
Noah began crying.
Not loudly.
He cried like a child who had spent years learning that sound made adults annoyed.
Evelyn held him.
Through the hospital window, Charles Whitmore stood across the street beside a black car.
