Chapter 19 - VICTOR COMES HOME

Victor was released after serving six years.

Federal restrictions prevented him from returning to the shipping industry.

Most of the old Blackwood organization no longer existed.

The mansion had become a public rehabilitation center funded by seized assets.

Victor arrived at Lily’s house carrying one small bag.

Ethan stood on the porch.

He was seven years old.

He remembered Victor through visits, calls, and photographs.

He did not remember the foyer clearly.

Victor stopped several feet away.

He did not open his arms automatically.

“May I hug you?”

Ethan looked at Lily.

She nodded only to show that the choice belonged to him.

The boy stepped forward.

Victor knelt.

Ethan wrapped both arms around his neck.

Victor closed his eyes.

Lily looked toward the lake.

She allowed them privacy without disappearing.

Victor stayed in a guesthouse nearby.

He did not assume he would become Ethan’s full-time parent immediately.

He attended therapy.

He learned routines.

He followed Lily’s rules.

No guns entered the property.

No unannounced visitors arrived.

No one used the Blackwood name to frighten teachers, doctors, or neighbors.

One evening, Victor found Ethan building blocks on the living-room floor.

The scene reminded him of the nursery footage.

He sat several feet away.

Ethan held up a wooden tower.

“Serena broke my arm?”

Victor became still.

“Who told you?”

“No one.”

“I heard Aunt Elena talking.”

Victor did not lie.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she wanted control.”

“Did you stop her?”

“I came home before she hurt you more.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Lily stopped her first.”

“Yes.”

Victor smiled sadly.

“Lily always reached you before I did.”

Lily heard from the kitchen.

Victor looked toward her.

May you like

There was no resentment in his face.

Only truth.
