Chapter 18 - THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE

Ethan grew inside a modest stone house near Lake Michigan.

The property had a small yard.

Lily planted flowers beside the porch.

Cole visited twice a week.

He no longer worked as a security chief.

He managed the legitimate Blackwood trust under federal oversight.

Marlene entered a witness-protection program.

She sent Ethan birthday cards without a return address.

Dr. Sofia Navarro remained his physician.

Detective Ruiz became the person Ethan called Aunt Elena.

The child knew Victor was his father.

He knew Victor lived somewhere he could not leave yet.

Lily did not describe prison as a business trip.

She did not create a comforting lie.

“Your father broke serious laws,” she explained when Ethan became old enough to ask.

“He is accepting the consequences.”

“Did he hurt people?”

“Yes.”

“Did he hurt me?”

“He allowed dangerous people into your life.”

“Then he saved you.”

Ethan thought about that.

“Can both be true?”

“Yes.”

Lily remembered asking herself the same question.

The answer remained yes.

On Ethan’s fifth birthday, Victor called through a secure family video line.

Ethan showed him a wooden ship.

“I built it.”

Victor smiled.

“It looks faster than anything I owned.”

“Lily helped.”

“She helps with everything.”

Victor looked at Lily.

The gratitude between them had changed over time.

It was no longer debt.

It was trust.

After the call, Ethan asked why Lily was not his mother.

She sat beside him.

“Your mother was Isabella.”

“She loved you very much.”

“Do you love me?”

“Yes.”

“Then what are you?”

Lily considered every title available.

Guardian.

Cousin.

Nanny.

Family.

“I am Lily.”

Ethan accepted that.

Children often understood relationships more easily than adults once ownership was removed from the language.
