Chapter 12 - THE NAME LILY NEVER KNEW

Lily confronted Anthony inside the police interview room.
Detective Ruiz remained beside her.
Anthony’s hands were cuffed to the table.
He smiled when Lily entered.
“You have Rosa’s courage.”
“She was my mother.”
“She raised you.”
“What is the difference?”
Anthony leaned back.
“Your biological father was my younger brother, Gabriel.”
Lily had never heard the name.
Gabriel Blackwood was erased from the family history after refusing to join the organization.
He fell in love with a schoolteacher named Hannah Hayes.
Rosa was Hannah’s sister.
When Gabriel attempted to leave Chicago, Anthony’s men attacked his car.
Gabriel died.
Hannah survived long enough to give birth.
She died from complications days later.
Rosa took the baby and disappeared.
“My mother hid me from you,” Lily said.
“She hid a Blackwood heir.”
“I do not want your name.”
Anthony smiled.
“The trust may not care what you want.”
If Victor and Ethan died, the empire dissolved.
But a separate legitimate inheritance passed through Gabriel’s line.
Lily had legal rights to Blackwood properties that Anthony wanted.
That explained why Rosa collected evidence.
She was not only protecting Isabella.
She was protecting Lily’s identity.
Anthony had searched for her for years.
Serena discovered the connection after hiring Lily.
Instead of dismissing her, Serena kept her close.
She hoped Lily would lead them to Rosa’s ledger.
Lily looked through the observation glass.
Victor stood there with his injured shoulder supported by a sling.
He had insisted on attending.
Lily entered the hallway.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Did Isabella?”
“Perhaps.”
“She brought me into the mansion.”
“She may have known exactly who you were.”
Lily looked toward Ethan’s room.
“Does this mean I am related to him?”
Victor nodded.
“Your father was my uncle.”
“You are my cousin.”
“Ethan is part of your family.”
Lily felt the floor shift beneath her.
For six months, she believed she protected Ethan because she loved him.
Blood did not create that love.
Learning the truth did not make it stronger.
It only explained why Rosa’s path had led Lily to the mansion.
Victor handed her another letter from the archive.
Rosa had written it years earlier.
Lily,
If you ever learn the Blackwood name belongs to you, remember that a name cannot command your conscience.
You owe the family nothing.
You owe the child whatever love freely asks of you.
Lily read the final sentence twice.
Victor looked at her.
“You can leave.”
“I will protect you.”
“You think I am afraid of staying?”
“I think everyone in this family has tried to decide your life.”
“I will not.”
Lily folded the letter.
“I am staying until Ethan is safe.”
“And after?”
May you like
“I will decide then.”
For the first time, a Blackwood offered her a choice without turning it into a test.
