Chapter 14 - THE FALL OF THE BLACKWOOD EMPIRE

Victor called every senior Blackwood leader into the mansion ballroom.

Some arrived angry.

Others arrived frightened.

All had heard about Anthony’s return and arrest.

Victor stood at the front with his injured shoulder bandaged beneath a dark suit.

Cole remained beside him.

Detective Ruiz waited outside with federal investigators.

Lily watched from the upper balcony while holding Ethan.

Victor addressed the room.

“My father taught us that survival required silence.”

“He taught us loyalty meant obeying the person with the most power.”

“That system killed my wife.”

“It nearly killed my son.”

Several men shifted uneasily.

Victor continued.

“The shipping routes used for illegal cargo are being surrendered.”

“The bribed officials are named in the witness ledger.”

“The weapons accounts are frozen.”

One lieutenant stepped forward.

“You are destroying everything your father built.”

“Yes.”

“You think the government will protect you?”

“No.”

“You think your enemies will forgive you?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Victor looked toward Ethan.

“Because my son will not inherit this.”

The lieutenant reached inside his coat.

Cole reacted immediately.

He forced the man against the table and removed a pistol.

Other guards closed the ballroom doors.

Victor did not flinch.

“You may leave now.”

“Anyone who stays will surrender records and accept investigation.”

“You cannot simply walk away from blood,” another man said.

Victor looked toward Lily.

“You can.”

Federal agents entered.

Some Blackwood members surrendered.

Others attempted to escape.

The security system locked every external gate.

Cole had transferred control to Ruiz hours earlier.

The empire collapsed faster than anyone expected.

It had been held together by fear.

Once fear changed direction, loyalty disappeared.

Victor turned over the ledger.

He included his own financial records.

He admitted to crimes committed under his authority.

Ruiz warned him that cooperation would not erase responsibility.

“I know,” he said.

Lily heard the answer.

It was the first time she believed Victor was not trying to purchase a cleaner version of himself.

He was accepting that protecting Ethan might cost him freedom.

After the arrests, Victor returned to the nursery.

The room remained partly damaged from Serena’s attack.

The wooden blocks were still scattered beneath the crib.

He picked up one.

Lily stood in the doorway.

“What happens to Ethan if you go to prison?”

“My legitimate assets enter his trust.”

“Cole and an independent board will manage them.”

“What about custody?”

Victor looked at her.

“I named you.”

Lily became still.

“You did what?”

“Only if you agree.”

“You cannot appoint me because of blood.”

“I appointed you because you crawled toward him when everyone else was afraid.”

Lily looked at Ethan sleeping in her arms.

“I need time.”

May you like

Victor nodded.

“You have it.”
