Chapter 17 - ISABELLA’S SECOND LETTER
One year after Victor’s sentencing, Lily received a package from the federal archive.
It contained another letter from Isabella.
The envelope had been addressed to Ethan’s future guardian.
Lily opened it after the child fell asleep.
To the person raising my son,
If you are Lily, then Rosa’s courage reached farther than any of us deserved.
Victor will want to protect Ethan with money, walls, and fear.
Remind him that children need truth more than power.
Do not tell Ethan his father was only a monster.
Do not tell him Victor was only a hero.
Tell him his father made terrible choices.
Tell him he also chose to stop.
Children must learn that people are responsible for both the harm they cause and the courage they find later.
Lily wiped tears from her face.
The final paragraph was addressed to her.
Your mother saved my life once when Anthony’s men followed me.
She hid me in a laundry truck and drove through a police blockade.
She never asked for payment.
When you were born, I promised I would protect you if Rosa could not.
I failed to find you before I died.
Bringing you into Ethan’s life was the only promise I managed to keep.
Lily closed the letter.
She had spent months wondering whether her place beside Ethan was created by destiny, manipulation, or blood.
Isabella’s words gave her a different answer.
Rosa and Isabella had made choices.
Lily had made her own.
She visited Victor the following week.
A glass wall separated them.
He looked thinner.
Less powerful.
More human.
Lily placed Isabella’s letter against the glass.
“She knew.”
Victor read the pages slowly.
When he finished, he pressed one hand against the barrier.
“I failed her.”
“Yes.”
“I failed Ethan.”
“You came home.”
“That does not erase the months before.”
“No.”
Victor looked at her.
“You never make anything easier.”
Lily smiled faintly.
“Truth rarely does.”
He asked about Ethan.
Lily described his first full sentence.
His obsession with toy boats.
His refusal to eat green beans.
