Chapter 8 – The Man at the Door

The ballroom fell silent as the man stopped beneath the crystal chandelier.
He was tall, impeccably dressed, and carried himself with effortless confidence.
"Ethan," he said with a polite smile. "I didn't realize the evening had become... so dramatic."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"Gregory Ashford."
The name rippled through the crowd.
Gregory Ashford was a respected investment consultant. For nearly a year, he had advised the Harrington family on several business acquisitions. Charming, intelligent, and well connected, he had earned everyone's trust.
Everyone except Mrs. Harrington.
She had never liked him.
"Why are you here?" Ethan asked.
Gregory lifted an invitation from his jacket pocket.
"I was invited to the gala."
His eyes briefly met Victoria's.
Only for a second.
But Detective Mercer noticed.
"So," Mercer said, stepping forward, "you know Miss Victoria."
Gregory smiled calmly.
"We've met."
Victoria quickly interrupted.
"We're just acquaintances."
Mercer didn't respond. Instead, he turned to one of the officers.
"Please secure the exits."
The officers immediately closed the ballroom doors.
Gregory raised an eyebrow.
"Detective, am I being detained?"
"Not yet."
Mercer held up the anonymous email.
"Have you ever seen this message?"
Gregory glanced at it for less than a second.
"No."
His answer came too quickly.
Leah quietly observed him.
Something felt wrong.
Not his words.
His hands.
He was wearing leather gloves.
Inside a warm ballroom.
In the middle of summer.
Leah looked at Mercer.
"Detective..."
Mercer followed her gaze.
"Mr. Ashford."
"Would you mind removing your gloves?"
Gregory chuckled.
"I have eczema."
"I'd rather keep them on."
Mercer's expression remained unchanged.
"I wasn't asking."
A tense silence filled the room.
Slowly...
Gregory removed the right glove.
A fresh scratch ran across the back of his hand.
The skin around it was red.
Leah immediately recognized it.
"That scratch is recent."
Gregory looked at her.
"And?"
She pointed toward the wheelchair.
"The emergency safety pin had a jagged edge after it broke."
"The person who pulled it out could easily have been cut."
Gregory's smile disappeared.
Mercer examined the wound.
"Interesting."
Before anyone could react—
One of the officers entered carrying a small evidence bag.
"Detective."
"We searched Mr. Ashford's vehicle."
Gregory's face changed instantly.
Inside the bag was a pair of wire cutters.
One tip was coated with black graphite.
Another bag contained a folded blueprint of the Harrington mansion.
The staircase where Mrs. Harrington nearly fell was circled in red ink.
The room erupted.
Gregory finally lost his composure.
"This proves nothing!"
Mercer looked at him calmly.
"It proves you planned something."
Gregory took one step backward.
Then another.
Suddenly, he shoved a waiter aside and sprinted toward the service corridor.
"Stop!" an officer shouted.
Guests scattered as Gregory raced through the hallway.
Two officers chased after him.
Ethan started forward.
But Leah grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
"He may be armed."
Seconds later, the sound of crashing dishes echoed from the kitchen.
Then—
A loud thud.
Silence.
The officers returned moments later, escorting Gregory in handcuffs.
His tuxedo was torn.
His expression was no longer confident.
Mercer looked him in the eye.
"Running wasn't your best decision."
Gregory said nothing.
Victoria stared at him in disbelief.
"You told me..."
She stopped herself.
Mercer's attention sharpened.
"I told you what?"
Victoria realized she had spoken too much.
Gregory slowly turned toward her.
Their eyes met.
In that single glance...
Both understood the other might confess first.
Mercer smiled slightly.
He had seen that look before.
Two suspects.
One secret.

And now...
Each had become the other's greatest danger.
