Chapter 6 – The Motive Finally Emerges

Detective Mercer carefully held up the torn latex glove.
The ballroom was silent.
A forensic technician, who had arrived with the responding officers, accepted the evidence bag without touching the glove itself.
"Graphite residue on both palms," she said after a quick visual inspection. "Exactly what we'd expect from someone reaching inside the wheelchair's brake assembly."
Mercer nodded.
"And the diamond?"
She examined the tiny stone caught in the torn fingertip.
"It appears to match the missing setting from Miss Victoria's bracelet."
Victoria's shoulders slumped.
"No..." she whispered. "This doesn't prove I wanted anyone dead."
"It proves you touched the brake," Mercer replied.
"It doesn't explain why."
The detective turned toward Ethan.
"Mr. Harrington, I need to ask a difficult question."
Ethan nodded.
"Go ahead."
"If something happened to your mother tonight... who would benefit financially?"
The question hit the room like a wave.
Several guests exchanged uneasy looks.
Mrs. Harrington sighed.
"I suppose there's no point hiding it now."
She looked at Ethan.
"Bring me the red folder from my study."
Charles hurried upstairs and returned moments later carrying a leather file embossed with the Harrington family crest.
Mrs. Harrington placed it on her lap.
"I was planning to announce this after the charity auction."
She opened the folder.
Inside was a newly signed estate amendment.
"I changed my will this morning."
A murmur swept through the ballroom.
Victoria's face lost all color.
Mrs. Harrington continued.
"For years, I intended to leave my company shares to Ethan after my passing."
She paused.
"But after my recent illness..."
"I realized I shouldn't wait."
She looked at her son.
"I transferred controlling ownership to Ethan effective immediately."
Ethan blinked in surprise.
"You never told me."
"I wanted it to be a celebration tonight."
Instead...
Her eyes drifted toward Victoria.
"It became something else."
Mercer slowly connected the pieces.
"So if Mrs. Harrington died before announcing the transfer..."
Charles answered quietly.
"The previous estate documents would still be in effect."
Mercer looked at him.
"And who was listed there?"
Charles hesitated.
Then spoke.
"Ethan would inherit the company..."
"...but any legal spouse would immediately receive a substantial marital trust worth nearly eighty million dollars."
The room erupted into shocked whispers.
Every head turned toward Victoria.
She and Ethan were only weeks away from their wedding.
Mercer's voice remained calm.
"So if Mrs. Harrington died tonight..."
"...and the old documents remained in force..."
Victoria could have gained access to an enormous fortune after marrying Ethan.
Victoria shook her head furiously.
"That's not why!"
"I didn't even know she'd changed the will!"
Mrs. Harrington stared at her.
"Only four people knew."
"My attorney."
"Charles."
"Myself."
"And..."
Her voice faltered.
Victoria looked away.
Everyone noticed.
Mrs. Harrington finished the sentence.
"And you."
The silence was deafening.
"You overheard my phone call this morning," Mrs. Harrington said quietly.
"I saw you outside my office."
Victoria closed her eyes.
She remembered.
She had been walking past when she heard enough of the conversation to realize everything was about to change.
If the transfer happened...
Her dreams of controlling the Harrington empire would disappear forever.
Leah watched Victoria carefully.
For the first time that night...
She didn't see arrogance.
She saw desperation.
The kind that came from someone whose carefully planned future had collapsed.
Victoria looked around the ballroom.
Every familiar face now regarded her with suspicion.
She was losing Ethan.
She was losing the Harrington family.
She was losing her reputation.
Then, unexpectedly...
She laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
"You all think you've figured everything out."
She looked directly at Leah.
"You think she's the hero."
Leah said nothing.
Victoria smiled.
"Ask her where she was three years ago."
The room fell silent once again.
Leah's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Ethan noticed.
Victoria pointed at her.
"Go ahead, Leah."
"Tell everyone why you suddenly appeared in Boston."
Leah lowered her eyes.
She had never spoken about her past.
Not to anyone.
Mrs. Harrington gently squeezed Leah's hand.
"You don't have to answer."
But Leah slowly looked up.
"No."
"It's time."
She took a deep breath.
"My real reason for coming to Boston..."
"...is connected to the Harrington family."
The guests held their breath.

Even Detective Mercer stopped writing.
Leah's next words would change the direction of the entire investigation.
