Chapter 13 – The Mastermind Reveals Himself

The ballroom had become a temporary command center.

Police officers moved between laptops, evidence tables, and interview rooms while the remaining guests quietly left the mansion.

Outside, dawn was beginning to break over Boston.

Inside...

The investigation was only getting deeper.

Nathan Voss sat in handcuffs without saying another word.

Gregory Ashford refused to answer any questions after requesting an attorney.

Only one mystery remained.

Who was "Director"?

Detective Mercer stared at the files recovered from the flash drive.

Most had been encrypted.

The department's cybercrime unit worked through the night to unlock them.

At 5:43 a.m., one of the analysts looked up.

"Detective."

"I think we found something."

Mercer hurried over.

A folder had finally opened.

Inside were dozens of voice messages.

The sender's identity was hidden, but every recording came from the same electronically disguised voice.

One message was dated three days earlier.

Mercer pressed Play.

The room became silent.

"The Harrington transfer cannot happen. Gregory handles the money. Victoria creates the distraction. Nathan finishes the operation. No mistakes."

Ethan clenched his fists.

Mrs. Harrington closed her eyes.

Victoria began to cry.

"No..."

"I didn't know..."

Leah looked at her.

For the first time, she believed her.

Victoria had clearly participated in the deception.

But she hadn't expected murder.

Another file opened.

This one contained payment schedules.

Names.

Photographs.

Corporate records.

Mercer slowly pieced everything together.

The Harrington company wasn't the first target.

Three other wealthy families had suffered suspicious "accidents" over the past five years.

Each case involved inheritance disputes.

Each case benefited unknown investors.

Each case had one consultant working quietly behind the scenes.

Gregory Ashford.

"But Gregory still isn't Director," Mercer said.

"He answers to someone."

Just then, Charles entered the room carrying an old leather archive box.

"I found these in Mr. Harrington's private study."

Inside were contracts dating back almost fifteen years.

Business partners.

Investment firms.

Board members.

One signature immediately caught Ethan's attention.

Richard Ellison.

Mrs. Harrington's face turned pale.

"I haven't heard that name in years."

Ethan frowned.

"Who is he?"

She answered slowly.

"Your father's former business partner."

"He disappeared after being accused of embezzlement."

Mercer looked at the cyber analyst.

"Search every file for Richard Ellison."

Seconds later...

A hidden document appeared.

The author field contained only one name.

R. Ellison

Mercer's expression hardened.

"So Director has a name."

Before anyone could react, an officer rushed into the room.

"Detective!"

"We've received a call."

"From who?"

"The suspect."

Mercer frowned.

"Which suspect?"

"Richard Ellison."

The room froze.

"He says he'll surrender..."

"...but only if Leah comes alone."

Everyone immediately objected.

"Absolutely not," Ethan said.

"It's too dangerous."

Nathan laughed quietly from across the room.

"I told you."

"He's always three moves ahead."

Mercer ignored him.

"What exactly did Ellison say?"

The officer checked his notes.

"He said..."

'Tell Nurse Leah she deserves the truth about what happened three years ago. If she wants it... she knows where to find me.'

Leah's heartbeat quickened.

"The hospital."

Mercer looked at her.

"What?"

"The old east wing."

"That's where I saw the raven tattoo."

"He wants me back where everything started."

Mercer made his decision.

"You're not going alone."

Leah nodded.

"I wasn't planning to."

One hour later...

A convoy of police vehicles arrived at the abandoned east wing of St. Andrew's Medical Center.

The building had been closed for nearly two years.

Broken windows.

Dark hallways.

Peeling paint.

It looked nothing like the place Leah remembered.

Mercer led the tactical team inside.

"Clear every floor."

Leah walked beside him.

She stopped outside an old operating room.

The door was slightly open.

Inside...

Someone sat calmly in a chair facing the window.

An older man in a gray suit.

His hands rested on a cane.

Without turning around, he spoke.

"I've been waiting for you, Leah."

Mercer raised his weapon.

"Richard Ellison."

The man slowly smiled.

"You finally found me."

Then he turned toward them.

His face was calm.

Almost friendly.

As though they were meeting for coffee instead of ending a fifteen-year conspiracy.

He looked directly at Leah.

"You've spent three years believing your life was destroyed by chance."

He paused.

"It wasn't."

Leah felt the blood drain from her face.

"What do you mean?"

Ellison folded his hands.

"The accident..."

"The rumors..."

"The witnesses who disappeared..."

"I arranged all of it."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Leah stared at him, unable to speak.

May you like

Ellison's smile widened.

"And that was only the beginning."
