Chapter 11 – The Connection No One Saw Coming

The ballroom fell completely silent.
Leah kept staring at the frozen image of the man with the raven tattoo.
Her hands trembled for the first time that night.
Detective Mercer noticed.
"You've seen him before."
Leah nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"It was three years ago."
She took a deep breath.
"The night of the highway accident, the emergency room was overwhelmed."
"There were dozens of patients."
"Family members."
"Police officers."
"Paramedics."
She closed her eyes, remembering.
"And there was one man who didn't seem to belong."
"The man with the raven tattoo."
Mercer listened without interrupting.
"He wasn't asking about any patient."
"He wasn't crying."
"He wasn't angry."
"He kept walking through the waiting area, watching people."
Leah frowned.
"When security asked who he was visiting..."
"He left without answering."
"I never saw him again."
Until tonight.
Mercer turned to one of the officers.
"Run facial recognition using the enhanced image and search for anyone with a raven tattoo connected to organized fraud or violent crime."
The officer hurried away.
Meanwhile, Ethan stood beside his mother.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Mrs. Harrington gently squeezed his hand.
"This isn't your fault."
"I should have seen Victoria for who she really was."
Leah quietly spoke.
"I don't think Victoria started this."
Everyone looked at her.
"I think she was manipulated."
Victoria, still seated under police supervision, looked up in surprise.
Leah continued.
"She wanted money."
"She wanted status."
"But planning a remote trap with fishing line..."
"That's sophisticated."
"Someone with experience designed it."
Mercer nodded thoughtfully.
"I agree."
"Victoria may have become part of a larger plan."
Just then, the officer returned.
His face was tense.
"Detective..."
"We have a match."
He handed Mercer a printed file.
The name at the top read:
Nathan Voss.
Former private security contractor.
Several arrests for fraud.
Known associate of organized financial crime groups.
Never convicted of homicide.
Mercer flipped through the pages.
Then he stopped.
His expression darkened.
"Nathan Voss once worked for..."
He looked toward Gregory.
"...Ashford Strategic Consulting."
Every eye turned to Gregory.
His face went pale.
"I fired him years ago."
Mercer wasn't convinced.
"Did you?"
He placed the file on the table.
Phone records.
Financial transfers.
Recent emails.
Gregory had exchanged messages with Nathan less than two weeks earlier.
Gregory lowered his head.
"I..."
Before he could continue—
One of the officers' radios crackled.
"Detective!"
"Front gate!"
"Someone just tried to leave the property in a maintenance van!"
Mercer's eyes sharpened.
"Description?"
"Male."
"Dark clothing."
"Raven tattoo on the neck."
Nathan Voss.
He had been inside the mansion the entire time.
"Go!" Mercer ordered.
Four officers sprinted toward the front entrance.
Ethan followed.
Leah instinctively started after them.
Mrs. Harrington caught her wrist.
"It's dangerous."
Leah smiled softly.
"So was that staircase."
Then she ran.
Outside, rain had begun to fall.
The maintenance van roared through the front gates.
Police cruisers blocked the driveway.
Nathan swerved sharply, clipping a stone fountain before abandoning the vehicle.
He disappeared into the dark gardens surrounding the estate.
Flashlights lit up the trees.
"Spread out!"
Mercer shouted.
"No one goes alone!"
Leah stopped near the abandoned van.
Something caught her eye.
Inside the passenger seat...
A weathered notebook.
She picked it up carefully.
Its pages were filled with names.
Dates.
Addresses.
Photographs.
Not just of the Harrington family.
There were pictures of businessmen.
Judges.
Hospital administrators.
And...
One photograph made Leah's heart stop.
It was taken three years earlier.
Outside St. Andrew's Medical Center.
The photo showed Leah leaving work after the fatal accident.
Someone had been watching her.
Long before she ever met the Harrington family.
Mercer opened the notebook beside her.
His expression turned grim.
"This wasn't about one family."
He looked at Leah.
"You were on his list."
Lightning flashed across the Boston sky.
Somewhere beyond the gardens...
Nathan Voss was still running.
And now everyone understood...
May you like
Mrs. Harrington had never been his first target.
She was only the latest.
