Chapter 7 – Leah's Secret

The ballroom remained silent.
Every eye was on Leah.
Even the orchestra had stopped playing.
She drew a slow breath before speaking.
"Three years ago, I wasn't a housemaid."
"I was a registered emergency room nurse at St. Andrew's Medical Center."
A murmur spread through the guests.
Victoria folded her arms, expecting the confession to destroy Leah.
Instead, Leah continued with calm honesty.
"I loved my job."
"I planned to spend my entire career there."
She looked at Mrs. Harrington.
"Until one night changed everything."
Detective Mercer listened carefully.
"What happened?"
Leah lowered her eyes.
"There was a multi-car accident during a snowstorm."
"The emergency department was overwhelmed."
"One patient didn't survive."
She paused.
"The man's family believed someone had made a fatal mistake."
Although an internal investigation later concluded that Leah had followed every medical protocol, public rumors spread quickly. She received threats, reporters camped outside her apartment, and she eventually resigned to escape the attention.
"I left Boston for almost a year."
"When I came back..."
"I wanted a quiet life."
"So I accepted work as a housemaid."
The room was completely still.
Mrs. Harrington reached for Leah's hand again.
"You never told me."
Leah smiled faintly.
"I didn't want sympathy."
"I only wanted another chance."
Victoria interrupted with a bitter laugh.
"So there it is."
"The perfect little hero has a scandal in her past."
Mercer looked directly at Victoria.
"No."
He closed his notebook.
"What she described wasn't a crime."
"It was a tragedy."
"And according to the hospital records, she was cleared of wrongdoing."
Victoria's confidence faltered.
"You... you checked?"
"I recognized her name."
"I reviewed the case while you were talking."
He looked at Leah.
"The investigation found no negligence."
Several guests nodded quietly.
One elderly physician attending the gala stepped forward.
"I remember that case."
He adjusted his glasses.
"The hospital defended Nurse Leah because the evidence showed she did everything possible."
He looked around the room.
"She became the target of rumors, not facts."
Mrs. Harrington's eyes filled with tears.
"My dear..."
"You've been carrying that burden alone."
Leah gave a small nod.
"I didn't want my past to define me."
Ethan stepped toward her.
"Instead..."
"You saved my mother's life tonight."
At that moment, Charles hurried back into the ballroom holding a sealed envelope.
"Mrs. Harrington."
"This just arrived from Attorney Reynolds' office."
Mrs. Harrington frowned.
"Now?"
"It was marked urgent."
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a certified copy of the amended trust documents she had signed that morning.
A second sheet slipped onto the marble floor.
Charles bent to pick it up.
His expression changed instantly.
"Detective..."
"You should see this."
Mercer accepted the page.
It wasn't part of the trust.
It was a printed email.
No signature.
No sender.
Just one sentence.
"If the amendment is announced tonight, the plan is over. Make sure Eleanor never leaves the gala alive."
The ballroom erupted into horrified whispers.
Mercer's expression hardened.
"This wasn't a spontaneous act."
He looked at Victoria.
"If this message is connected to you..."
"...then someone helped you."
Victoria's face drained of color.
For the first time all evening...
Her fear didn't seem to be about herself.
She stared at the anonymous message as though she had never seen it before.
Then she whispered four words that stunned everyone.
"I didn't write that."
Mercer narrowed his eyes.
"Are you saying there's someone else involved?"
Victoria slowly looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.
Her lips trembled.
"He's here."
Every guest instinctively turned toward the massive oak doors.
At that exact moment...
The doors slowly opened.
A tall man in a black tuxedo stepped inside.
His calm smile vanished the instant he realized the police had already arrived.
Ethan recognized him immediately.
May you like
"So..."
"It was you."
