Chapter 9 β The Day of Judgment
Three weeks later, every seat in the courtroom was filled.
Reporters lined the back wall, notebooks ready. Camera crews waited outside, knowing the verdict in State v. Vanessa Carlisle would dominate the evening news.
Vanessa entered wearing a simple navy suit instead of designer couture. Without the glamour, she looked smaller than anyone remembered.
She avoided looking at the gallery.
Especially at Emma.
Eleanor Hayes sat quietly in the front row, her silk scarf folded neatly in her lap. The bruises on her neck had faded, but no one in the courtroom had forgotten how they got there.
When the trial began, the prosecution wasted no time.
The security footage played on a large monitor.
Then came the cellphone recording.
Vanessa's own words echoed through the courtroom.
"People like you should disappear."
No explanation could erase them.
Her attorney argued that she had acted in anger, not with criminal intent.
But one witness after another told the same story.
Guests admitted they had been too afraid to intervene.
Security officers confirmed Emma had used only the force necessary to stop the attack.
Detective Foster explained how Vanessa later threatened witnesses in an attempt to silence them.
Finally, Emma took the stand.
She answered every question calmly.
"I didn't think about consequences," she said. "I only saw someone who couldn't breathe."
The courtroom fell silent.
Even Vanessa lowered her eyes.
After hours of testimony, the jury left to deliberate.
The wait felt endless.
At last, they returned.
The foreperson stood.
"We find the defendant..."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"...guilty on all counts."
A quiet gasp spread through the courtroom.
The judge looked directly at Vanessa.
"Privilege is never a license for cruelty. In this courtroom, every life carries equal value."
