Chapter 1 – The Woman in the Wheelchair

The ballroom fell silent.
Crystal chandeliers shimmered above hundreds of guests dressed in black tie, but no one moved.
The only sound was the ragged gasp of the elderly woman in the wheelchair as she struggled to breathe. Her pale fingers clawed at the silk scarf twisted tightly around her neck.
"Take your filthy hands off me!" Vanessa Carlisle hissed, yanking harder. Diamonds glittered on her wrist as if they approved of the violence.
The old woman's face turned crimson.
Several guests instinctively reached forward—then stopped.
No one wanted to offend the daughter of one of the city's wealthiest developers.
Then someone ignored that unspoken rule.
Emma Brooks.
The twenty-six-year-old maid had spent the evening quietly refilling champagne glasses and clearing empty plates. She wasn't supposed to interfere with guests.
But she couldn't watch an old woman suffocate.
She rushed across the marble floor and grabbed Vanessa's wrist.
"Let her go."
Vanessa spun with blazing eyes.
"What did you just touch?"
Emma didn't answer.
She pried the woman's fingers from the scarf.
The elderly woman collapsed back into her wheelchair, coughing violently.
Vanessa staggered backward from the force.
Her expensive heels slipped across the polished floor.
She crashed into a serving table.
Champagne exploded across her designer gown.
For exactly two seconds...
Silence.
Then came the scream.
"She attacked me!"
Vanessa pointed a shaking finger at Emma.
"Call security! Have this maid arrested immediately!"
Several guards rushed toward the scene.
Emma stood frozen.
She knew exactly what this looked like.
A maid had shoved one of the city's most influential women during a charity gala.
Nobody cared why.
And judging by the expressions surrounding her...
She was about to lose far more than her job.
What Emma didn't know was that someone had witnessed every second from the balcony above.
May you like
He hadn't looked away once.
And he was finally coming downstairs.
