Chapter 3 – The Footage Never Lies

Vanessa's heartbeat thundered in her ears.

She forced out a nervous laugh, hoping it sounded convincing.

"Security cameras can be misleading," she said, crossing her arms. "Angles don't always show what really happened."

No one answered.

Richard Whitmore merely raised one finger.

A member of the event staff hurried toward the audiovisual booth.

Seconds later, the enormous LED screen behind the ballroom stage flickered to life.

Conversations died instantly.

Every guest turned toward the screen.

The recording began without sound.

There was Vanessa approaching the elderly woman, Eleanor Hayes, who sat quietly in her wheelchair near the charity display. Eleanor smiled politely after declining an invitation to donate through Vanessa's family foundation.

Vanessa's expression changed.

Her smile vanished.

She leaned forward, grabbed Eleanor's silk scarf, and wrapped it around her fist.

The footage clearly showed Eleanor struggling to breathe.

Several guests gasped.

Then came Emma.

She sprinted across the room without hesitation.

Instead of striking Vanessa, she carefully pulled the older woman's scarf free before using one controlled shove to create enough distance between the attacker and her victim.

The replay froze.

Richard looked at the security guards.

"Did anyone see an assault?"

Neither guard spoke.

"There wasn't one," the older guard finally admitted. "The employee acted to stop a dangerous situation."

Whispers spread through the ballroom like wildfire.

"I thought Vanessa said she was attacked..."

"She lied."

"That poor old woman could have died."

Phones quietly appeared in guests' hands.

Several had already begun recording the giant screen.

Vanessa noticed.

Panic surged through her.

"If anyone uploads that video," she shouted, "I'll sue every one of you!"

No one lowered their phone.

For the first time in years, money wasn't buying silence.

Richard turned toward the event manager.

"Lock every exit."

The manager blinked in surprise.

"Sir?"

"No one leaves until the police arrive."

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

"You... you're calling the police?"

Richard's face remained unreadable.

"No."

His next words chilled the room.

"They're already on their way."

The confidence Vanessa had worn all evening shattered completely.

She finally understood that this was no longer a scandal she could bury.

It was becoming a criminal investigation.
