Chapter 7 β The Truth Goes Viral

By sunrise, the story had spread across the country.
Every major news outlet carried the same headline:
SOCIALITE ARRESTED AFTER CHARITY GALA ASSAULT CAUGHT ON CAMERA.
The surveillance footage flooded social media. Millions watched the clip of Vanessa Carlisle tightening the silk scarf around Eleanor Hayes's neck, followed by Emma Brooks rushing forward to stop her.
The comments came faster than anyone could read them.
"That maid is the real hero."
"Everyone else just stood there."
"Protect Emma at all costs."
Vanessa's public relations team worked frantically to contain the damage. They released a carefully worded statement claiming the incident had been "misunderstood" and asking the public not to "rush to judgment."
The statement lasted less than an hour.
A second video surfaced.
It had been recorded on a guest's phone from another angle.
Unlike the silent security footage, this recording captured every word.
"You old parasite," Vanessa had sneered.
"People like you should disappear."
The room had gone quiet before she grabbed the scarf.
There was no misunderstanding.
There was only cruelty.
Sponsors immediately began distancing themselves from the Carlisle family. Invitations to charity galas, business conferences, and fundraising events were quietly withdrawn. Several organizations announced they would return donations connected to the family until the investigation was complete.
Meanwhile, Emma woke up expecting another ordinary morning.
Instead, reporters waited outside her modest apartment building.
She almost turned around.
Richard Whitmore happened to arrive at the same moment.
"I thought you might need some help," he said with a reassuring smile.
Emma looked at the crowd of cameras.
"I don't want to become famous."
Richard nodded.
"Then don't."
He handed her a folder.
Inside was an official employment contract.
Not as a maid.
As the new Community Outreach Director for the Whitmore Foundation.
Emma stared at the document in disbelief.
"I've never had an office job."
Richard smiled.
"You've already shown me the one qualification that matters."
She looked up.
"What's that?"
"Integrity."
For the first time in years, Emma allowed herself to imagine a future that wasn't defined by cleaning up after other people's lives.
But across town, sitting alone in a holding cell, Vanessa received devastating news.

Her father had just called.
He wasn't coming to bail her out.
