Chapter 8 – The Price of a Family Name

Vanessa gripped the receiver with trembling hands.

"There has to be a mistake," she whispered. "Dad... tell them to release me."

The silence on the other end felt endless.

Finally, Charles Carlisle spoke.

His voice was steady, but colder than she had ever heard it.

"There will be no special treatment."

Vanessa froze.

"What?"

"The board met this morning."

Her father sighed heavily.

"They've asked me to resign as chairman."

She could hardly breathe.

"No... they'll never do that to you."

"They already have."

The call ended.

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time in her life, she was completely alone.

Across the city, Richard accompanied Eleanor Hayes back to Ashcroft Manor.

The mansion felt strangely peaceful after the chaos of the previous night.

Eleanor paused in front of an old portrait hanging above the fireplace.

It showed her late husband standing beside Richard's grandfather decades earlier.

"They dreamed this place would help people," Eleanor said softly.

"Not impress them."

Richard studied the portrait.

"I think we've forgotten that."

She smiled.

"Then remember it."

Emma's first day at the Whitmore Foundation felt unreal.

The same woman who had polished silver trays only days earlier now sat in a meeting room with nonprofit directors, community leaders, and scholarship coordinators.

Some looked skeptical.

Richard noticed.

Before anyone could question his decision, he stood.

"I didn't hire Emma because she saved Mrs. Hayes."

The room fell silent.

"I hired her because, when everyone else protected their reputation..."

"...she protected a human life."

No one argued.

That afternoon, Detective Foster arrived with unexpected news.

"The district attorney reviewed the evidence."

Richard looked up.

"And?"

"They're adding another charge."

Emma frowned.

"What charge?"

"Witness intimidation."

He placed another phone on the conference table.

A voicemail began to play.

Vanessa's unmistakable voice echoed through the room.

"If any of you testify against me... you'll regret it."

The message had been secretly recorded by one of the guests.

Emma exchanged a glance with Richard.

Vanessa still believed fear could control people.

May you like

She had no idea that every attempt to save herself was only strengthening the case against her.

And the trial was now only weeks away.
