CHAPTER 18 The Maze of Memories

The Archive fell into complete silence.
Only the slow hum of its ancient machinery remained.
Then another announcement echoed through the endless corridors.
Memory Restoration: 12% Complete.
Richard pressed both hands against his temples.
A sharp pain exploded behind his eyes.
Fragments flashed through his mind.
A little girl laughing.
Michael running across a garden.
Another boy...
Adam.
All three chasing a golden retriever through the estate.
Richard staggered.
Rachel caught him before he fell.
"Easy."
Richard looked at her in confusion.
"I remember him."
Rachel nodded.
"I know."
On the other side of the steel partition...
Elena dropped to one knee.
Her breathing became uneven.
Daniel rushed to her side.
"Elena!"
She grabbed his arm.
"I remember..."
"What?"
"The fire."
Claire's expression immediately changed.
"What do you remember?"
Elena closed her eyes.
"There wasn't one fire."
Everyone froze.
Claire slowly whispered,
"No..."
"There were two."
Meanwhile...
Michael walked alone through a narrow aisle between towering shelves.
He had separated from Richard's group while searching for another exit.
The Archive was shifting again.
Entire rows moved silently around him.
The path behind him disappeared.
The path ahead opened.
Then a voice echoed through the darkness.
"You always get lost."
Michael stopped walking.
He knew that voice.
"Adam."
A figure stepped out from behind the shelves.
Adam.
Identical face.
Different eyes.
No smile.
No anger.
Only exhaustion.
For several long seconds...
Neither brother spoke.
Adam finally broke the silence.
"You came."
Michael nodded.
"You knew I would."
Adam looked around the Archive.
"It remembers us."
Michael quietly replied,
"So do I."
Richard's group continued moving through the maze.
Frank suddenly stopped beside an old bookshelf.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
One book was sticking out farther than the others.
Frank pulled it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside lay three children's wooden nameplates.
ELENA
MICHAEL
ADAM
Richard picked them up with trembling hands.
He remembered carving them himself.
One Christmas.
Long before everything fell apart.
Tears filled his eyes.
"I loved him."
Rachel gently nodded.
"You loved both of them."
Across the Archive...
Claire led Elena toward another chamber.
At its center stood an enormous mechanical device.
Hundreds of film reels slowly rotated inside glass cylinders.
Daniel frowned.
"What is this?"
Claire answered quietly.
"The Memory Engine."
Lily tilted her head.
"The what?"
Claire smiled sadly.
"It stores recordings."
"Not on computers."
"But inside people."
Daniel looked horrified.
"That's impossible."
Claire shook her head.
"Not impossible."
"Just unforgivable."
Suddenly—
A bright projector activated by itself.
Old footage appeared across the walls.
Home videos.
Birthday parties.
Family dinners.
Then...
The night of the fire.
Everyone watched silently.
Little Elena was asleep upstairs.
Michael and Adam were playing in the basement.
Richard ran inside.
Then—
The footage stopped.
The image glitched.
Someone had edited it.
Claire whispered,
"They erased the rest."
Back in the maze...
Michael and Adam stood facing each other.
Neither raised a weapon.
Neither took a step forward.
Michael finally asked,
"Why?"
Adam smiled sadly.
"Wrong question."
"Ask who."
Michael frowned.
"Who?"
Adam looked directly into his brother's eyes.
"We didn't start Phoenix."
"We inherited it."
Michael's expression hardened.
"Then help me end it."
Adam looked away.
"I've been trying."
Michael stared.
"What?"
Adam slowly removed his jacket.
Across his chest...
Beneath his collarbone...
Was a long surgical scar.
Michael's eyes widened.
"They put one in you too."
Adam nodded.
"They made sure neither of us could leave."
Meanwhile...
Margaret watched every camera feed from her command center.
One of her officers looked concerned.
"Director."
"Subjects Zero and One have made contact."
Margaret didn't even look up.
"I expected it."
"What are your orders?"
Margaret smiled faintly.
"Nothing."
The officer blinked.
"Nothing?"
"They'll destroy each other."
Inside the Memory Engine chamber...
The projector suddenly restarted.
This time...
The missing footage appeared.
Richard burst into the basement.
Smoke filled the room.
Michael cried for help.
Adam held Elena's favorite teddy bear.
Then...
A masked man entered behind Richard.
He struck Richard across the head.
Richard collapsed.
Claire covered her mouth.
"No..."
The masked man picked up Adam.
Then Michael.
Then disappeared through a hidden door.
The basement exploded seconds later.
Daniel whispered,
"Richard never chose between them."
Claire nodded through tears.
"He never had the chance."
At that exact moment...
Richard stopped walking.
He felt the memory return.
The blow.
The smoke.
The hidden door.
He fell to his knees.
"I didn't abandon them."
Rachel hugged him tightly.
"No."
"You were framed."
Suddenly—
Every loudspeaker inside the Archive activated.
Margaret's voice echoed calmly.
"Congratulations."
"You finally remembered."
Richard slowly stood.
"Why?"
Margaret answered without hesitation.
"Because now..."
"...you know exactly what I took from you."
Then every light in the Archive switched to brilliant white.
A final announcement echoed through every corridor.
Memory Restoration Complete.
Immediately afterward...
Another voice interrupted the system.
Not Margaret.
Not Claire.
Not Adam.
A young girl's voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
"Hello, Dad."
Richard froze.
Elena froze.
Michael froze.
Claire's face turned white.
The voice continued.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...my name is Grace Bennett."
Silence.
No one moved.
May you like
Because every member of the Bennett family knew one impossible fact.
There had never been a Grace Bennett.
