CHAPTER 13 The Phoenix Archive

The command center remained silent after Sophia's transmission.

No one spoke for several seconds.

The blinking marker labeled PHOENIX ARCHIVE seemed to glow brighter with every passing moment.

Richard finally broke the silence.

"We're going underground."

Gabriel nodded.

"It's the only move that makes sense now."

Michael looked toward the map.

"And Margaret knows it."

Rachel crossed her arms.

"Of course she does."

"She designed this game."

Daniel looked at Elena.

"Can you travel?"

She instinctively placed a hand over her stomach.

"I don't have a choice."

Lily squeezed her mother's hand.

"I'm coming too."

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

"I'm not leaving you."

Richard knelt beside his granddaughter.

"Lily..."

"You have to trust me."

The little girl looked between her grandfather and her parents.

"I don't want our family separated again."

Richard smiled sadly.

"Neither do I."

Rachel opened another hidden compartment beneath the command console.

Inside lay several small communication earpieces.

Medical supplies.

Flashlights.

And an old paper map.

She spread it across the table.

"The digital maps don't show the original tunnels."

Gabriel leaned over it.

"They were erased decades ago."

Rachel pointed to a narrow passage beneath the coastal cliffs.

"This is the only route that leads to the Archive without passing the lighthouse."

Frank studied the map carefully.

"This tunnel shouldn't exist."

Rachel smiled faintly.

"It officially doesn't."

Meanwhile...

Miles away...

Margaret stood inside a massive underground operations center.

Dozens of analysts worked in complete silence.

One of them looked up.

"Director."

"They're moving toward the Archive."

Margaret nodded.

"Exactly as planned."

Another analyst hesitated.

"What about Gabriel?"

Margaret looked at one of the monitors.

Gabriel's face filled the screen.

"He still believes he's making his own decisions."

She smiled.

"He never does."

Back beneath the estate...

The group entered the forgotten tunnel.

The passage was narrow.

Cold seawater dripped from the ceiling.

The deeper they walked...

The older everything became.

Stone replaced concrete.

Rusted lantern hooks lined the walls.

Frank ran his hand across the rock.

"This tunnel is over a hundred years old."

Gabriel nodded.

"It predates the estate."

Richard frowned.

"Who built it?"

Gabriel answered quietly.

"People who planned for wars."

After nearly twenty minutes...

The tunnel opened into an enormous natural cavern.

Everyone stopped.

Above them...

A massive opening in the rock revealed the night sky.

Moonlight poured inside.

In the center of the cavern stood a forgotten railway platform.

Dust covered everything.

An old train rested on rusted tracks.

Lily whispered,

"There's a train underground?"

Frank laughed softly.

"I never knew."

Rachel looked toward Gabriel.

"You did."

Gabriel nodded.

"It was Phoenix's evacuation route."

Michael walked to the locomotive.

"It still has power."

Daniel frowned.

"After all these years?"

Michael opened the control panel.

A green indicator light blinked.

"Backup batteries."

"They're charging from the underground generators."

Richard shook his head.

"They planned for everything."

Suddenly...

A distant whistle echoed through the cavern.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked down the tunnel.

"Did you hear that?"

Another whistle.

Closer.

The train tracks began vibrating.

Rachel's expression changed.

"We're not alone."

At the far end of the cavern...

Another train emerged from the darkness.

Its headlights pierced the tunnel.

It rolled slowly toward them.

No one could see inside.

The windows were blacked out.

Michael whispered,

"They're early."

Gabriel's face hardened.

"No."

"They've been waiting."

The black train stopped only fifty feet away.

Its doors opened.

One by one...

Men and women stepped onto the platform.

None carried visible weapons.

All wore identical gray suits.

The oldest among them couldn't have been over fifty.

The youngest...

Barely twenty.

They stood in perfect silence.

Watching.

Then an elderly woman stepped forward.

White hair.

Elegant posture.

A silver cane.

Margaret.

She had come herself.

Elena instinctively moved in front of Lily.

Richard stared at Margaret.

"It's over."

Margaret smiled.

"No."

"It has finally begun."

She looked around the cavern.

"How wonderful."

"The Bennett family."

"Rachel."

"Gabriel."

"Frank."

"And Subject Zero."

Her eyes settled on Michael.

"You've all saved me so much time."

Michael stepped forward.

"We're done running."

Margaret nodded.

"I know."

"That's why I came personally."

Without warning...

She tossed a small metal object onto the railway tracks.

It rolled to a stop between both groups.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

"A recorder?"

Gabriel's expression changed.

"No..."

Margaret calmly took one step backward.

"Listen."

The device activated.

A familiar voice echoed through the cavern.

Claire Bennett.

Richard's heart stopped.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...I've failed."

Elena covered her mouth.

Her mother's voice continued.

"Margaret will never stop."

"Not while the Archive exists."

Richard whispered,

"Claire..."

The recording continued.

"If there's only one way to end this..."

"...destroy everything."

Margaret smiled.

"You see?"

"Even Claire understood."

Before anyone could react—

A deep explosion shook the cavern.

The railway tracks split apart.

The ceiling cracked.

Huge rocks crashed onto the platform.

Everyone scattered.

Lily screamed.

Daniel grabbed Elena.

Richard pulled Rachel to safety.

Michael tackled Gabriel out of the falling debris.

When the dust finally settled...

The cavern had changed completely.

A massive chasm now separated the two sides.

Margaret stood calmly on the opposite platform.

Untouched.

She smiled across the gap.

"There."

"No more running."

"No more hiding."

She slowly raised a small remote control.

"There is only one decision left."

She pressed a button.

Every communication earpiece crackled.

A computerized voice echoed through the cavern.

ARCHIVE SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED.

TIME REMAINING: 01:59:59

Michael looked toward the distant tunnel leading to the Archive.

Two hours.

Rachel whispered,

"We'll never make it."

Margaret smiled.

"Exactly."

Then she looked directly at Elena.

"But one person still can."

Everyone turned toward Elena.

Margaret's voice echoed through the cavern.

"The Archive recognizes only one remaining blood authorization."

May you like

She smiled.

"You."
