CHAPTER 1 The Woman Beneath the Water

The first thing Elena heard was her daughter's scream.

"MOM!"

It echoed across the marble courtyard before disappearing beneath the roar of rushing water.

Her body slammed into the deep end of the indoor infinity pool.

The freezing water stole every breath from her lungs.

Her wrists jerked violently.

Metal chains.

She looked down in horror.

Heavy steel cuffs wrapped around both wrists were secured to a thick iron ring bolted into the bottom of the pool.

She kicked desperately.

Nothing moved.

The chain was too short.

She could barely reach the surface.

Panic exploded inside her chest.

"No..."

Above her, sunlight filtered through the glass ceiling in fractured waves.

Standing at the pool's edge was Victor Ashford.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Perfect calm.

He held a silver key between two fingers.

"The lock fits perfectly," he said almost casually.

Elena struggled upward until her mouth barely broke the surface.

"Victor...please..."

Her voice dissolved into coughing.

Victor crouched.

"You've always been polite."

He tilted his head.

"That's why this is almost disappointing."

"You don't have to do this."

"Oh..."

He smiled.

"I absolutely do."

Another voice entered the room.

Her husband.

Daniel.

Elena's heart leaped.

"Daniel!"

She twisted toward the doorway.

For one impossible second she believed everything would be fine.

He had come.

He would stop this.

Instead...

Daniel didn't move.

He stood beside Victor with both hands in his pockets.

His face showed nothing.

No fear.

No surprise.

Only resignation.

Elena stared.

"...Daniel?"

He lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words hurt more than the freezing water.

"What?"

"I'm sorry."

Victor laughed softly.

"Tell her the truth."

Daniel swallowed.

"This wasn't supposed to happen like this."

"What wasn't?"

Victor answered instead.

"Your marriage."

Silence.

Elena blinked.

Victor continued.

"You thought Daniel fell in love with you."

He chuckled.

"Cute."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Victor..."

"No."

Victor waved him silent.

"She deserves honesty."

He looked directly into Elena's terrified eyes.

"Seven years ago your father made one mistake."

Elena froze.

"My father?"

"He stole something."

"He never—"

"He did."

Victor's smile vanished.

"And when he disappeared..."

"You became the replacement."

The words made no sense.

"My father died."

Victor leaned closer.

"Did he?"

Elena felt her heartbeat stop.

"What...did you say?"

Before Victor could answer—

A tiny figure burst into the room.

"Lily!"

The six-year-old girl sprinted toward the pool.

"MOMMY!"

Daniel instinctively stepped forward.

Victor stopped him with one hand.

"Don't."

Lily dropped to her knees.

She reached desperately toward Elena.

"Mommy!"

Elena stretched upward.

"Lily, sweetheart..."

Their fingertips were still inches apart.

Victor sighed.

"This is exactly why children complicate everything."

He snapped his fingers.

A security guard gently pulled Lily backward.

"No!"

She kicked and screamed.

"Let me go!"

"Mommy!"

Elena fought the chains until metal tore into her wrists.

Blood clouded the water.

"LILY!"

The child sobbed uncontrollably.

Daniel looked away.

Victor watched with complete indifference.

Then he slowly held the key above the pool.

"This little thing..."

He smiled.

"...is the only reason you still have hope."

He loosened his fingers.

The key slipped.

Plink.

It struck the concrete edge.

Bounced once.

Twice.

Then disappeared into a narrow drainage grate beside the pool.

Elena stared.

"No..."

Victor looked down through the grate.

"Oops."

He shrugged.

"How careless of me."

There was no spare key.

She saw it in his eyes.

This had always been the plan.

Then another sound echoed through the room.

A deep mechanical hum.

Elena looked upward.

Her blood turned cold.

The reinforced pool cover had begun sliding shut.

A thick steel barrier slowly moved across the ceiling opening.

Victor checked his watch.

"Automatic safety system."

He smiled.

"When it seals completely..."

"...oxygen becomes a limited resource."

Daniel suddenly frowned.

"Victor..."

"What?"

"That's enough."

Victor looked at him.

"You've gone soft."

"I said that's enough."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"You had seven years to stop me."

Daniel said nothing.

Victor stepped closer.

"You signed every document."

"You approved every transfer."

"You watched me isolate her."

"You helped make this possible."

Daniel looked physically sick.

"I never agreed to kill her."

"No."

Victor smiled again.

"You simply made sure no one would miss her."

Silence filled the room.

Elena could barely process what she had heard.

Every anniversary.

Every business meeting.

Every family vacation.

Every apology.

Every promise.

Everything...

Had been part of a lie.

Lily broke free from the guard.

She ran toward the edge again.

"Mommy!"

Victor sighed impatiently.

"Take her away."

"No!"

She grabbed the chain.

Tiny hands.

Tiny fingers.

Trying with every ounce of strength.

It didn't move.

Not even an inch.

Elena forced herself to smile.

"It's okay, baby."

"No!"

"You have to be brave."

"I don't want brave!"

"I want you!"

Those words shattered everyone in the room.

Even Daniel looked like he might collapse.

Victor remained unmoved.

He nodded toward another guard.

The man carried Lily away despite her screams.

Her cries echoed down the hallway.

"Mommy!"

"I love you!"

"Please don't leave!"

Then...

Silence.

Only the sound of water remained.

Victor straightened his tie.

"I'll leave you two alone."

He looked at Daniel.

"If you decide to save her..."

"...remember what happens to your mother."

Daniel's face drained of color.

Victor walked away.

The heavy doors closed behind him.

Daniel remained standing.

Frozen.

Elena whispered,

"Who is he threatening?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead...

He knelt beside the water.

"I'm so sorry."

She stared at him.

"Tell me the truth."

His voice shook.

"My father..."

"...isn't dead."

Everything inside Elena stopped.

"What?"

"He disappeared because someone was hunting him."

Daniel looked around to make sure no one was listening.

"And Victor isn't my brother."

Elena blinked.

"What are you talking about?"

"He was adopted."

Daniel leaned closer.

"And he's been planning this family takeover for almost twenty years."

The pool cover continued sliding shut.

Only half the sunlight remained.

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He removed a tiny folded piece of paper sealed in plastic.

"I hid this years ago."

"What is it?"

"If anything happened..."

"...I was supposed to give it to you."

He pressed it into her hand.

"Go to the address."

"What address?"

"After you escape."

Escape?

Elena looked at the chains.

"There is no escape."

Daniel suddenly stood.

His eyes widened toward the entrance.

Someone was coming back.

Victor's voice echoed through the hallway.

"Daniel?"

Daniel whispered urgently.

"Don't let Victor know you have that note."

Footsteps grew louder.

Then—

May you like

Without another word—

Daniel dove into the freezing water beside her.
