CHAPTER 15 The Keeper Beneath the Cliffs

The lantern cast long shadows across the cavern wall.

The old man stood on a narrow stone ledge far below the collapsed bridge.

His beard was snow-white.

His back was slightly bent with age.

Yet his voice carried clearly through the darkness.

"Don't let go."

Michael looked down.

"I'm trying not to."

The rusted pipe groaned under his weight.

Another sharp creak echoed through the cavern.

It wouldn't hold much longer.

Daniel dropped to his stomach near the edge.

"Give me your hand!"

"I'm too far!"

Richard searched frantically for another way down.

"There has to be a path."

The old man raised the lantern.

"There is."

"You've just forgotten it."

Rachel suddenly froze.

"I know him."

Everyone looked at her.

The old man smiled.

"I was wondering when someone would remember."

Frank stared in disbelief.

"You're..."

The old man nodded.

"Thomas."

Richard whispered the name.

"Thomas Hale."

The estate's first caretaker.

The man everyone believed had died nearly thirty years earlier.

Margaret remained perfectly calm on the opposite side of the chasm.

"So..."

"You finally came out of hiding."

Thomas looked across the gap.

"I promised Claire I would."

Margaret's smile faded for the first time that night.

"So she trusted you."

"She trusted the right person."

Thomas lifted the lantern toward the cliff wall.

A series of carved symbols became visible.

Richard's eyes widened.

"The old escape route."

Thomas nodded.

"It was never destroyed."

Michael looked toward the markings.

"I can't reach them."

Thomas smiled.

"You don't need to."

He pressed a loose stone beside him.

A deep rumble echoed through the cavern.

Hidden gears began turning beneath the rock.

Everyone watched as a narrow stone staircase slowly unfolded from inside the cliff.

Daniel couldn't believe it.

"A staircase..."

Frank laughed softly.

"It was here all along."

Michael swung carefully toward the first stone step.

The pipe finally snapped.

For one terrifying second he fell—

Then landed hard on the staircase below.

He rolled twice before stopping.

Bruised.

Breathing heavily.

But alive.

Lily clapped her hands through her tears.

"Uncle Michael!"

Michael looked up and smiled weakly.

"I've had better landings."

Thomas climbed the staircase with surprising agility.

When he reached Michael, he handed him the lantern.

"You'll need this."

Michael frowned.

"To reach the Archive?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"To survive what guards it."

Gabriel looked toward Richard.

"What does he mean?"

Thomas answered without turning.

"The Archive was never protected by locks."

"It was protected by fear."

Meanwhile...

On the opposite side of the cavern, Margaret quietly stepped away from her team.

One of her agents approached.

"Director."

"The eastern team is in position."

Margaret nodded.

"And the lighthouse?"

"Everything is ready."

She looked toward Elena.

"Excellent."

Rachel noticed Margaret moving.

"She's leaving."

Gabriel frowned.

"She's too calm."

Richard nodded.

"Because she still believes she's winning."

Thomas led Michael down the hidden staircase.

At the bottom...

The path opened into another tunnel.

Unlike the others, this one was beautifully preserved.

The walls were lined with old oil paintings.

Family portraits.

Maps.

Letters framed behind glass.

Elena stared.

"What is this place?"

Thomas smiled.

"The original Bennett Archive."

Richard stopped walking.

"My grandfather built this."

Thomas nodded.

"Long before Phoenix existed."

Daniel picked up one of the framed documents.

It was dated 1918.

He frowned.

"This is over a century old."

Thomas looked at him.

"The Bennetts didn't begin protecting secrets."

"They began protecting people."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"Somewhere along the way..."

"We forgot the difference."

The countdown echoed again.

01:32:41

Michael quickened his pace.

"We're running out of time."

Thomas nodded.

"The Archive is close."

As they rounded another corner...

They reached a massive circular stone door.

Unlike every other entrance...

There were no electronic locks.

No keypads.

Only an ancient inscription carved into the center.

THE TRUTH BELONGS ONLY TO THOSE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT.

Elena slowly reached out.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas looked at her.

"It means every truth costs something."

Gabriel examined the door carefully.

"There isn't a handle."

"There doesn't need to be."

Thomas pointed toward a small brass plate beneath the inscription.

A single handprint.

Richard stepped forward.

"My hand?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Elena.

"Hers."

Elena hesitated.

Daniel gently took her hand.

"You don't have to."

Thomas interrupted.

"Actually..."

"She does."

Before anyone could react—

A loud explosion echoed from somewhere behind them.

The tunnel shook violently.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

Rachel looked back.

"They've found the staircase."

Margaret's forces were coming.

Fast.

Thomas looked calmly at Elena.

"There isn't any more time."

Elena slowly placed her palm against the brass plate.

Nothing happened.

For one long second...

The chamber remained silent.

Then—

A tiny click.

The brass plate glowed faintly.

A warm light spread beneath Elena's hand.

A mechanical voice, untouched by time, echoed through the tunnel.

Bloodline verified.

Primary Bennett authorization accepted.

The massive stone door slowly began to open.

Everyone stared into the darkness beyond.

Rows upon rows of shelves stretched farther than the eye could see.

Thousands of journals.

Boxes.

Film reels.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

History itself.

The Phoenix Archive.

Before anyone could step inside...

A single gunshot echoed through the tunnel.

BANG!

Thomas staggered.

The lantern slipped from his hand and shattered against the stone floor.

Richard caught the old man before he collapsed.

"No!"

Thomas looked past Richard.

Toward Elena.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"They're already..."

"...inside."

He pointed weakly into the Archive.

Everyone turned.

Deep between the endless shelves...

A lone silhouette stood waiting in the darkness.

The figure slowly stepped into the faint light.

It wasn't Margaret.

It wasn't Adam.

It wasn't Gabriel.

It was Claire Bennett.

Elena's mother.

She looked exactly like the woman in the old photographs.

Calm.

Uninjured.

And when she spoke...

Her first words sent a chill through everyone.

May you like

"Elena..."

"Don't come any closer."
