CHAPTER 17 The Second Secret

Margaret's laughter echoed through the Archive.
It seemed to come from every direction at once.
"Congratulations," she repeated.
"You've found the first secret."
"The second one..."
"...will destroy you."
The speakers went silent.
Only the distant grinding of moving shelves remained.
Elena looked at Claire.
"What second secret?"
Claire didn't answer.
Instead, she stared at the old Ashford family file in Daniel's hands.
Daniel slowly closed the folder.
"It doesn't matter."
Elena looked at him.
"It matters to me."
He reached for her hand.
"No matter what that file says..."
"...you're my wife."
"And our family is real."
Elena squeezed his hand.
"I know."
But the question refused to leave her mind.
What had Margaret meant?
On the other side of the steel wall...
Richard continued reading the letter written in his own handwriting.
Every sentence made less sense than the last.
If you are reading this...
...the memory procedure succeeded.
Gabriel frowned.
"Memory procedure?"
Richard looked confused.
"I've never had one."
Rachel slowly lowered her eyes.
"Yes..."
"You did."
Everyone turned toward her.
Michael stared at Rachel.
"You knew?"
She nodded.
"Claire insisted."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"I would never agree to erase my memories."
Rachel looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"You did."
"Because the alternative..."
"...would have gotten Elena killed."
Frank leaned against the stone wall.
"My God..."
"So that's why."
Richard looked at him.
"Why what?"
Frank sighed.
"You forgot more than people."
"You forgot an entire year."
Richard's heart pounded.
"What year?"
Frank answered quietly.
"2004."
Richard tried to remember.
Nothing.
Birthdays.
Business meetings.
Vacations.
Everything before and after 2004 was clear.
But that year...
Was almost completely blank.
Meanwhile...
Claire led Elena's group deeper into the Archive.
The shelves gradually gave way to a circular reading room.
In the center stood a wooden table.
Only one object rested upon it.
A leather-bound journal.
Claire stopped walking.
"It belongs to you."
Elena frowned.
"I've never seen it."
Claire nodded.
"You wrote it."
Daniel looked confused.
"When?"
Claire answered softly.
"When you were six."
Elena laughed nervously.
"I couldn't write like that."
Claire gently opened the journal.
The first page revealed neat handwriting.
Not childish.
Careful.
Detailed.
The date read:
October 14, 2004
Elena stared.
"I was six."
Claire nodded.
"Read the first sentence."
With trembling hands, Elena read aloud.
Today Dad told me never to tell anyone about the little boy in the basement.
The room fell completely silent.
Daniel slowly looked at Richard's family tree again.
Then back at the journal.
"A little boy?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"Michael."
Michael's voice suddenly echoed through the intercom from the other side of the Archive.
"Mom!"
Claire rushed toward the nearest speaker.
"Michael!"
"I can hear you!"
"So can I!"
Static interrupted them.
Then silence.
The connection was gone.
Back in Richard's chamber...
Michael heard Elena's voice faintly through the walls.
"They're close."
Gabriel studied the room carefully.
"This chamber wasn't designed for storage."
Rachel pointed upward.
Hidden mirrors lined the ceiling.
"Observation room."
Richard looked around.
"They were watching us."
Gabriel nodded.
"They always were."
Suddenly...
The stone pedestal in the center of the room began to rotate.
A hidden drawer slid open.
Inside rested a small metal box.
Richard carefully opened it.
Inside lay an old VHS tape.
A handwritten label covered the front.
BENNETT FAMILY — DECEMBER 24, 2004
Frank whispered,
"We recorded Christmas that year."
Richard frowned.
"I don't remember."
Rachel looked away.
"Exactly."
Gabriel searched the room until he found an ancient television and VCR.
Surprisingly...
They still worked.
He inserted the tape.
Static filled the screen.
Then...
The picture cleared.
Richard appeared.
Younger.
Laughing.
Claire stood beside him.
Little Elena opened presents near the fireplace.
Then—
A second little boy ran into the frame.
Not Michael.
Someone else.
Richard frowned.
"Who is that?"
Rachel closed her eyes.
"Oh no..."
The tape continued.
Richard lifted the little boy into his arms.
"Merry Christmas, Adam."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Michael stared at the screen.
"Adam..."
The name echoed through the room.
The same Adam who had claimed to be his brother.
The tape continued playing.
Richard smiled warmly at both boys.
"Remember..."
"You'll always be brothers."
The recording ended abruptly.
Richard slowly stood.
His face was white.
"I knew him."
Rachel nodded.
"Yes."
"You raised him."
Back in the reading room...
Elena turned another page of the journal.
A folded photograph slipped onto the table.
She picked it up.
It showed herself as a child.
Standing between Michael...
And Adam.
All three children smiling.
Her hands began shaking.
"I remember..."
Claire looked at her.
"What?"
"The swing."
"The garden."
"The dog."
More memories flooded back.
Not complete.
Just fragments.
A fourth child.
Laughter.
A birthday cake.
Then...
Fire.
Elena gasped.
"There were always three of us."
Claire whispered,
"Yes."
At that exact moment...
Every light inside the Archive went out.
Emergency lights glowed deep red.
A new voice echoed through the building.
Not Margaret.
Not Gabriel.
Not Adam.
A calm computerized announcement.
Primary memory restoration complete.
Everyone froze.
Richard looked around.
"What does that mean?"
Claire whispered from the other side of the wall,
"The Archive..."
"...has started giving our memories back."
Then another announcement followed.
Warning.
Unauthorized subject detected inside the Archive.
Identity confirmed.
Adam Bennett.
Michael's eyes widened.
"No..."
Because Adam...
May you like
Wasn't outside anymore.
He was already somewhere inside the Archive.
