Chapter 7 – A Witness With Nothing Left to Lose

The federal safe house was hidden behind the ordinary façade of an office building on the edge of the city.

No reporters.

No cameras.

No signs.

Only armed federal agents standing watch.

Isabella Rossi sat alone in a small interview room, staring at the untouched cup of coffee in front of her. Less than twenty-four hours earlier, she had believed she was destined to become part of Marcus Thorne's glamorous world.

Now she was a key witness against one of the most dangerous white-collar criminals in the country.

The door opened.

Special Agent Rebecca Collins entered with a digital recorder.

"We're on the record," she said. "State your full name."

"Isabella Marie Rossi."

Rebecca nodded.

"Tell us about Damian Voss."

Isabella closed her eyes.

"I met him eighteen months ago."

"He said he admired my work organizing charity events."

"He told me Marcus deserved someone who truly understood his world."

Rebecca remained silent, letting Isabella continue.

"It started with gifts."

"Then expensive trips."

"Then money."

She laughed bitterly.

"I convinced myself I earned it."

"When did he ask you to approach Marcus?"

"Almost immediately."

Rebecca's expression hardened.

"So this was never a coincidence."

"No."

Isabella shook her head.

"I was recruited."

She described private dinners, encrypted messages, and secret meetings inside Damian's penthouse office.

Every conversation had the same objective.

Get close to Marcus Thorne.

Gain his trust.

Destroy his marriage if necessary.

Rebecca asked quietly,

"Did Damian ever explain why?"

Isabella hesitated.

"Because Marcus would never approve the acquisition."

"What acquisition?"

"The merger."

She looked directly at Rebecca.

"Damian wanted to merge Voss International with Sterling Medical Group."

Rebecca frowned.

"David Sterling would never allow it."

"Exactly."

"So Damian created another plan."

Meanwhile, Marcus and David sat inside FBI headquarters reviewing Isabella's statement.

A financial analyst projected dozens of corporate documents onto a large screen.

"If the merger had happened," the analyst explained, "Voss International would've gained access to nearly every charitable medical contract administered by Sterling Medical."

David's face darkened.

"Billions of dollars."

The analyst nodded.

"And almost no oversight."

Marcus finally understood.

"This was never about me."

Rebecca entered the room carrying Isabella's signed testimony.

"No."

"It was about control."

She placed the document on the table.

"And Khloe accidentally discovered the fraud before Damian could complete it."

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

"So he tried to eliminate the only person who could expose everything."

Rebecca looked at him.

"He underestimated your wife."

That evening, Khloe watched the sunset from her hospital room.

The baby kicked again.

This time, stronger.

Marcus smiled.

"I think someone's already fighting."

Khloe laughed softly.

"Just like their father."

Before Marcus could answer, his phone rang.

Rebecca's voice was urgent.

"We've got a problem."

"What happened?"

"Damian Voss has disappeared."

Marcus's smile vanished.

"He boarded a private jet an hour ago."

"Destination unknown."

Marcus looked through the hospital window toward the fading skyline.

"You think he's running."

Rebecca's answer came immediately.

"No."

"We think he's preparing his next move."

At that same moment, thousands of feet above the Atlantic Ocean, Damian Voss calmly closed a classified file bearing one name:

Khloe Thorne.

He looked at the man seated across from him.

"Prepare the contingency plan."

The man nodded once.

"What about the witness?"

Damian's eyes grew cold.

"If Isabella survives..."

"...everything we've built dies."
