Chapter 14 – The Verdict

Three months later…

Autumn sunlight poured through the tall windows of the United States District Courthouse.

Every seat in the courtroom was filled.

Journalists lined the back wall, their notebooks open. Federal agents stood at every entrance. Families who had benefited from the Thorne Foundation's hospitals sat quietly in the gallery, waiting for justice.

At the defense table sat Damian Voss.

Gone were the custom-tailored suits and confident smile.

He wore a plain navy prison uniform.

For the first time in decades, he had no influence left to hide behind.

Across the aisle, Marcus gently held Khloe's hand.

Now eight months pregnant, she looked healthier than she had in months. The bruises had faded, but the memory of that night in the hospital never would.

The judge entered.

"Please be seated."

The courtroom fell silent.

The prosecution's final witness was Isabella Rossi.

She walked to the stand slowly, her voice unsteady as she took the oath.

Rebecca Collins watched from the front row.

Marcus never took his eyes off Isabella.

She looked completely different from the woman who had stormed into Khloe's hospital suite months earlier.

There was no arrogance.

No designer clothes.

Only regret.

"I accepted money," Isabella admitted.

"I believed Damian Voss when he told me Marcus's marriage was only for appearances."

She lowered her head.

"I let jealousy become hatred."

Tears rolled down her face.

"And because of my choices..."

"...an innocent mother and her unborn child almost died."

The courtroom remained silent.

No one interrupted.

No one celebrated.

Her confession carried its own punishment.

Next came the evidence.

The hospital security footage played on the courtroom screens.

Every shove.

Every kick.

Every lie.

The jurors watched in stunned silence.

Then the encrypted financial records were presented.

Millions of dollars stolen from children's hospitals.

Cancer research.

Emergency relief funds.

Programs that had simply vanished because of greed.

The final exhibit was Project Phoenix.

The prosecutor read aloud the section identifying the unborn Thorne child as "Target Alpha."

Several jurors visibly recoiled.

Damian Voss never looked away.

His face remained expressionless.

After two days of deliberation, the jury returned.

The courtroom stood as the foreperson rose.

"We, the jury, find the defendant..."

A long pause.

"...guilty."

One count.

Then another.

Fraud.

Money laundering.

Racketeering.

Conspiracy.

Attempted murder.

Solicitation of murder.

Witness intimidation.

Every single count.

The judge removed his glasses before speaking.

"Mr. Voss, your crimes were driven not by necessity, but by greed."

He looked directly at the defendant.

"You stole hope from the sick."

"You weaponized charity."

"You treated human life as an obstacle to profit."

The courtroom was silent enough to hear a pen drop.

"I hereby sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

A quiet gasp spread through the gallery.

Federal marshals immediately escorted Damian to his feet.

For the first time, he turned toward Marcus.

"You think you've won."

Marcus answered calmly.

"No."

"We simply stopped you."

Without another word, Damian Voss disappeared through the courtroom doors.

He would never walk free again.

As the courtroom slowly emptied, Khloe rested Marcus's hand against her stomach.

A tiny kick answered.

She smiled through tears.

"Our baby waited for the verdict."

Marcus laughed softly.

"Looks like someone already knows what justice feels like."

Outside, church bells echoed across the city.

For the first time in many months…

The future no longer felt uncertain.

Only one chapter remained.
