Chapter 4 – The Man Behind the Curtain

The penthouse office overlooked the city like a throne above the clouds.

Damian Voss stood silently before the floor-to-ceiling windows, one hand wrapped around a crystal glass of untouched whiskey. The television behind him replayed footage of guests leaving the charity gala while reporters speculated about an "unexpected medical emergency."

No one outside the hospital knew the truth.

Not yet.

Across the room, a nervous man lowered his phone.

"Isabella has been detained," he reported.

Damian didn't turn around.

"And the footage?"

"Hospital security secured every recording before our people could access it."

For several seconds, only silence answered.

Then Damian smiled.

A calm, almost pleasant smile.

"She disappointed me."

The assistant swallowed.

"What should we do now?"

Damian finally faced him.

His tailored navy suit and silver tie made him look more like a respected philanthropist than the architect of a financial empire built on deception.

"Nothing desperate."

He placed the glass on his desk.

"Desperate people make mistakes."

Meanwhile, inside Sterling Medical Group, David Sterling stood in a secured conference room with Special Agent Rebecca Collins.

A digital map covered one wall.

Names.

Companies.

Offshore accounts.

Charities.

Nearly every line eventually connected to one corporation.

Voss International Holdings.

Rebecca folded her arms.

"For two years we've suspected someone has been laundering charitable donations through medical procurement contracts."

David nodded.

"But we couldn't prove it."

Rebecca pointed toward Damian's photograph.

"Until your niece copied those files."

Marcus stared at the screen.

"You think Damian Voss ordered Isabella to attack Khloe?"

Rebecca didn't answer immediately.

"We think Isabella believed she was helping herself."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"She wasn't the mastermind."

Rebecca zoomed in on a series of encrypted financial transfers.

"She'd been receiving monthly payments from shell companies linked to Voss International."

David looked grim.

"They bought her."

Rebecca nodded.

"They promised her influence."

"A position beside Marcus."

"Perhaps even marriage one day."

Marcus's face hardened.

"So she was manipulated."

Rebecca met his eyes.

"Manipulated."

"Paid."

"And disposable."

Several floors above, Khloe watched the city lights through her hospital window.

She couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she felt Isabella's shove again.

The sharp edge of the marble table.

The terrifying pain.

Then a gentle knock came at the door.

Marcus entered carrying a small paper cup.

"Chamomile tea."

Khloe smiled faintly.

"You remembered."

"I remember everything."

He sat beside her.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally Marcus reached into his jacket.

"I'm sorry."

Khloe looked confused.

He handed her a velvet jewelry box.

Inside rested the diamond wedding ring she had quietly removed weeks earlier after growing frustrated with his constant business travel and emotional distance.

"I found it in your dresser."

Khloe lowered her eyes.

"I wasn't leaving you."

"I know."

Marcus's voice cracked.

"You were waiting for me to notice."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I needed my husband."

"You kept sending your assistant."

Marcus gently slid the ring back onto her finger.

"I can't change the last few months."

"But I can change tomorrow."

Before Khloe could answer, David hurried into the room.

His expression was unusually tense.

"Marcus."

"What happened?"

David handed him a tablet.

Hospital surveillance showed a man wearing a maintenance uniform entering the restricted maternity floor.

No work order.

No identification badge.

His face partially hidden beneath a cap.

Rebecca Collins' voice came through the tablet speaker.

"We've confirmed he isn't one of the hospital employees."

Marcus's heart pounded.

"Where is he now?"

David looked toward the hallway.

"Less than fifty feet from Khloe's room."

At that exact moment—

The lights on the maternity floor suddenly went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the corridor.

And somewhere outside Khloe's door...

Someone quietly turned the handle.
