Chapter 11 – The Trap

No one spoke for nearly a full minute.

The words Target Alpha: The unborn Thorne heir glowed on the monitor like a death sentence.

Marcus read them again.

And again.

Each time, they felt more impossible.

"Why?" he finally asked.

Rebecca Collins closed the document.

"Because your child represents something Damian Voss can never buy."

Marcus looked at her.

"Legacy."

David Sterling nodded grimly.

"The Thorne Foundation isn't controlled by a board."

"It's controlled by the Thorne family."

He folded his hands.

"Your grandfather's trust was written decades ago."

"If anything happens to you..."

Marcus finished the sentence.

"...my child becomes the legal beneficiary."

Rebecca looked at Khloe.

"And if neither of you survives..."

David answered quietly.

"The Foundation dissolves."

Marcus suddenly understood.

Damian had never wanted the Foundation.

He wanted it gone.

Without the Foundation, billions of dollars in charitable hospitals, children's research programs, and disaster relief funding would be thrown into years of legal uncertainty.

That chaos would allow Voss International to absorb contracts worth billions.

"It was never personal," Marcus whispered.

Rebecca shook her head.

"It became personal when Khloe uncovered the fraud."

Later that afternoon, the FBI assembled inside a secure operations room.

Maps covered every wall.

Satellite images.

Vehicle routes.

Phone records.

Rebecca addressed the team.

"We've been reacting."

She pointed toward Damian's photograph.

"Now we make him react."

An agent raised an eyebrow.

"You want to bait him?"

Rebecca smiled.

"I want him to believe he's winning."

That evening, every major news network received an anonymous leak.

BREAKING NEWS

"Key evidence in the Voss investigation reportedly destroyed during hospital security breach."

Within an hour, the story spread across television and social media.

Commentators questioned whether prosecutors still had a case.

Public opinion shifted almost instantly.

Exactly as the FBI had hoped.

Thousands of miles away, Damian Voss watched the broadcast from his private residence overlooking Lake Geneva.

His attorney muted the television.

"It appears the evidence is gone."

Damian remained silent.

Then, for the first time in days...

He smiled.

"I told you."

"They had nothing."

His chief of security stepped forward.

"What about Marcus Thorne?"

Damian walked toward the fireplace.

"Without evidence..."

"They're vulnerable."

He picked up his encrypted phone.

"Call everyone."

The man hesitated.

"Everyone?"

Damian nodded.

"It's time to go home."

Back in the United States, Rebecca watched Damian's private jet appear on a radar screen.

An intelligence analyst looked at her.

"The aircraft filed a return flight."

Rebecca smiled.

"He took the bait."

Marcus folded his arms.

"So he's coming back."

"No."

Rebecca corrected him.

"He's coming back because he believes we've lost."

She looked around the room.

"And confident criminals make careless mistakes."

David looked toward Marcus and Khloe.

"We'll end this."

Marcus nodded once.

"For good."

Late that night, Khloe stood alone on the balcony of the safe house, watching rain fall over the city.

She felt the baby kick gently.

A comforting reminder that hope was still alive.

Marcus stepped beside her, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.

"You should be resting."

She leaned against him.

"I will."

"When this is over."

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"It will be."

Neither of them noticed the tiny red light blinking from the roof of a building nearly half a mile away.

A high-powered camera lens focused directly on them.

Far behind the camera, a man lowered a satellite phone.

His voice was calm.

"I've confirmed visual contact."

A familiar voice answered from the other end.

Damian Voss.

"Excellent."

The sniper asked only one question.

"When do I take the shot?"

Damian looked out the window of his descending private jet.

"Not tonight."

"I want Marcus alive."

A long pause followed.

"But if you have a clear shot at Khloe..."

"...don't miss."
