Chapter 13 – The Fall of an Empire

The conference room inside FBI Headquarters buzzed with controlled urgency.
Maps, financial records, surveillance photos, and witness statements covered every wall. At the center of it all stood Rebecca Collins.
She looked at Marcus, David, and Khloe.
"We're done chasing Damian."
She tapped a photograph of an abandoned waterfront warehouse.
"Tonight..."
"...he comes to us."
Marcus frowned.
"How?"
Rebecca smiled slightly.
"We let him believe he still has one chance to destroy the evidence."
Earlier that morning, federal prosecutors had deliberately leaked another story.
Khloe Thorne would personally deliver the decrypted financial files to the grand jury that evening.
The announcement spread across every major news network.
Exactly as planned.
In reality, Khloe never intended to leave the safe house.
The FBI convoy would be nothing more than bait.
If Damian still believed he could erase the evidence, he would have to act.
Across the city, Damian Voss watched the report from inside the warehouse that now served as his temporary command center.
Around him, half a dozen armed mercenaries checked weapons and radios.
His former CFO, Ethan Mercer, stood nearby.
"The leak feels too convenient," Ethan warned.
Damian remained calm.
"Perhaps."
"But if they're telling the truth..."
He looked toward the convoy route displayed on a digital map.
"...this is our last opportunity."
He picked up his pistol.
"We end it tonight."
At exactly 8:00 p.m., three armored SUVs left the FBI compound.
Television helicopters followed overhead.
Reporters broadcast the convoy live.
The nation watched as the vehicles crossed downtown toward the federal courthouse.
Damian watched too.
"There."
He pointed at a narrow bridge crossing the river.
"They'll have nowhere to run."
Mercenary vehicles pulled onto the roadway.
Everything unfolded exactly as Rebecca had predicted.
Except...
The SUVs were empty.
The moment Damian's men surrounded the convoy, floodlights exploded to life.
Blinding white beams illuminated the bridge from every direction.
Police cruisers blocked both exits.
FBI tactical teams emerged from armored vehicles.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
Gunfire shattered the silence.
Mercenaries scrambled for cover behind their SUVs.
Damian fired twice before diving behind a concrete barrier.
He realized the truth immediately.
"It was a trap."
Rebecca's voice echoed through loudspeakers.
"Damian Voss!"
"Your men are surrounded."
"Surrender now."
Instead, Damian reached for his radio.
"No retreat."
"We fight."
The bridge erupted into chaos.
Bullets sparked against steel guardrails.
Smoke grenades rolled across the pavement.
Helicopters circled overhead.
Within minutes, most of Damian's mercenaries had surrendered.
Others lay wounded.
Only Damian and Ethan Mercer remained.
Ethan looked toward the river below.
"It's over."
Damian's expression hardened.
"No."
"It ends when I say it ends."
He turned—
Only to find Marcus standing twenty feet away.
Wearing a bulletproof vest.
Surrounded by FBI agents.
Marcus met Damian's eyes.
"You destroyed families."
"You stole from sick children."
"And you tried to murder my wife."
Damian laughed quietly.
"You still think this is about money?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Damian slowly lowered his pistol.
For one brief moment...
It looked as though he intended to surrender.
Then, in one sudden motion, he spun toward Marcus and fired.
The shot echoed across the bridge.
But before the bullet could reach its target—
Another shot rang out.
An FBI sniper.
Damian's weapon flew from his hand as he collapsed onto one knee, clutching his wounded shoulder.
Within seconds, agents tackled him to the ground.
Rebecca stepped forward and snapped handcuffs around his wrists.
"This empire..."
she said calmly,
"...is finished."
As Damian was led away, flashing cameras captured the image that would appear on front pages around the world the next morning:
