Chapter 9 - THE WITNESS WHO WANTED IMMUNITY
Victor Crane agreed to testify.
In exchange, he demanded a reduced sentence and permanent witness protection.
Emily hated the idea.
“He killed my father.”
Detective Ruiz did not soften the truth.
“Without him, the board may succeed in invalidating the marriage.”
“Then they win because a murderer wants a reward.”
“They may win because the people who planned this killed or silenced every honest witness.”
Daniel offered another option.
Adrian’s safety-deposit box contained photographs taken after the ceremony.
Sarah wore a simple white dress.
Adrian wore a dark suit.
A courthouse clock appeared in the background.
The photographs supported the marriage but did not prove legal registration.
Investigators searched county archives.
The original certificate was missing.
A clerk remembered Charles Hawthorne’s attorney removing old records years earlier.
Crane remained essential.
Emily agreed to hear his testimony.
They met behind reinforced glass.
Crane looked older than the photographs.
His hair was white.
His injured shoulder was bandaged.
He did not apologize.
“Your father knew the plane was damaged before takeoff.”
Emily stared at him.
“What?”
“I warned him.”
Crane claimed he sabotaged the fuel line under Malcolm’s orders.
Before Adrian boarded, Crane lost his nerve.
He told Adrian the plane was unsafe.
Adrian boarded anyway.
“He said there were documents inside the aircraft Malcolm needed to believe were destroyed.”
Crane’s voice remained flat.
“He planned to land at a private field after ten minutes.”
“What happened?”
“Malcolm replaced the pilot.”
The new pilot ignored Adrian’s instructions.
The plane crashed into the lake.
Crane insisted he did not know Malcolm planned to ensure Adrian died.
Emily looked at him with disgust.
“You cut the fuel line.”
“Yes.”
“You accepted money.”
“Yes.”
“You do not get to describe yourself as surprised.”
Crane lowered his eyes.
He admitted witnessing the marriage.
He also confirmed Sarah was pregnant.
Charles Hawthorne knew.
Malcolm knew.
Vanessa’s mother knew.
The conspiracy stretched across generations.
Crane signed a sworn statement.
The board immediately attacked his credibility.
They called him a criminal trading lies for freedom.
The inheritance hearing began two weeks later.
The Hawthorne attorneys described Emily as an opportunist.
They questioned why Sarah never made a legal claim.
Emily testified.
“My mother received photographs of my father’s destroyed plane.”
“Beneath them was a picture of me as a newborn.”
“The message said I would be next if she spoke.”
The courtroom fell silent.
Margaret testified about the medication and crash that destroyed her memory.
Daniel testified against his own board.
Lydia testified about Vanessa’s planning.
Finally, Crane confirmed the marriage.
The judge ruled that Emily was Adrian’s lawful daughter.
Her inheritance rights were valid.
Twenty-eight percent of Hawthorne voting shares transferred into her name.
The courtroom erupted.
Emily did not smile.
The shares were not a victory.
They were proof of everything taken from her parents.
Outside the courthouse, Daniel asked what she intended to do.
“I do not know.”
Her phone rang.
The caller was Vanessa.
She had somehow gained access to a jail phone.
“I know what happened to your mother,” Vanessa said.
