Chapter 3 - THE BOX ADRIAN LEFT BEHIND
The bank opened early under private security.
Emily entered the vault with Daniel, Margaret and Detective Ruiz.
The manager placed a long metal box on the table.
Emily’s hands trembled as she inserted the key supplied by the bank.
Inside were letters, photographs and a sealed legal envelope.
The first letter was written by Adrian.
My dear Emily,
If you are reading this, I failed to reach you while I was alive.
Emily stopped.
Daniel stood silently beside her.
Adrian wrote that Sarah became pregnant shortly before his death.
He intended to marry her.
His father, Charles Hawthorne Senior, opposed the relationship.
Sarah did not come from a powerful family.
More importantly, Adrian planned to expose illegal company transactions involving Malcolm Vale.
The elder Hawthorne believed scandal would destroy the business.
He offered Sarah money to disappear.
She refused.
Then threats began.
Adrian moved her to another city and prepared to contact federal investigators.
His plane crashed before he could testify.
Emily turned to Margaret.
“You said it was an accident.”
“That is what we were told.”
The legal envelope contained a copy of Adrian’s will.
It named Sarah as his intended wife.
It acknowledged their unborn child.
It assigned thirty percent of Adrian’s Hawthorne trust interest to that child upon proof of parentage.
Emily could inherit nearly a quarter of the voting power in Hawthorne Industries.
Daniel understood why Vanessa had targeted her.
The planned merger required approval from seventy percent of the voting shares.
Daniel controlled forty-two percent.
Margaret controlled twelve.
Several board members controlled the remainder.
Vanessa’s marriage agreement would have transferred another block of family voting rights to a joint marital trust.
But Emily’s claim would freeze every major transaction until the inheritance dispute was resolved.
Malcolm Vale’s expansion deal could collapse.
The final item in the box was a small cassette tape.
The bank manager located an old player.
Adrian’s voice filled the vault.
“If anything happens to me, Malcolm Vale is responsible.”
Margaret gripped the edge of the table.
Adrian described false construction invoices, offshore accounts and payments to transportation inspectors.
Malcolm used Hawthorne projects to move illegal cargo through private shipping terminals.
Adrian had collected proof.
He hid the full records somewhere inside Eleanor’s diamond necklace.
Everyone looked at the evidence bag containing the jewelry Vanessa had planted.
Detective Ruiz requested permission to examine it.
The necklace clasp contained a tiny mechanical opening.
Inside was a micro-storage key.
Vanessa had not stolen the necklace merely to frame Emily.
She had been trying to recover the hidden evidence Adrian placed inside it decades earlier.
The footage showed Vanessa holding the necklace for only seconds.
She may not have known how to open it.
Daniel looked toward Emily.
“She put it in your bag because she needed you arrested.”
“And once the police took the necklace as evidence, her father’s lawyers could recover it.”
Detective Ruiz nodded.
“Or replace it before anyone examined the clasp.”
The detective sealed the necklace in a new evidence container.
A bank alarm suddenly sounded.
Security doors locked throughout the vault.
The manager checked the monitor.
Smoke filled the lobby.
Daniel’s security team reported that someone had started a fire near the electrical room.
Then the vault lights went out.
