Chapter 1 - THE SILENCE AFTER THE VIDEO

The security footage ended with Vanessa’s hand withdrawing from Emily’s handbag.
The frozen image remained on the screen.
No one in the foyer moved.
Vanessa stood beneath the chandelier with her mouth slightly open.
Only minutes earlier, she had seemed untouchable.
Her black dress was flawless.
Her diamond earrings caught the light.
Her engagement ring marked her as the future wife of Daniel Hawthorne, the billionaire owner of the mansion.
Now every guest had watched her commit a crime.
Daniel slowly turned away from the screen.
“You planted the necklace.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“You slapped an innocent woman.”
“She was going through Margaret’s private rooms.”
Emily lowered her hand from her burning cheek.
“I was cleaning the upstairs hallway.”
Vanessa pointed at her.
“She has been watching this family for months.”
Daniel’s expression became colder.
“The camera showed you placing the necklace in her bag.”
“It does not show why.”
Margaret Hawthorne stood near the staircase.
The missing necklace had belonged to her mother, Eleanor.
It was valued at nearly two million dollars.
But Margaret was not looking at the diamonds.
She was staring at the small silver locket around Emily’s neck.
Emily noticed.
Her fingers closed protectively around it.
Daniel faced the head of security.
“Lock the gates.”
Vanessa’s father, Malcolm Vale, stepped out from among the guests.
His gray tuxedo remained perfectly pressed.
“You are overreacting.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your daughter committed theft, assault and evidence tampering inside my home.”
Malcolm smiled without warmth.
“You will not call the police.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“Why would I protect her?”
“Because the merger is scheduled for Monday.”
Hawthorne Industries needed the Vale family’s shipping network to complete a twelve-billion-dollar international expansion.
The marriage between Daniel and Vanessa was supposed to make the alliance permanent.
Malcolm believed the deal made his daughter untouchable.
Daniel removed his phone.
“Detective Ruiz, this is Daniel Hawthorne.”
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Wait.”
He stepped away from her.
“I need officers at my residence.”
Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
Margaret finally spoke.
“Emily.”
Emily looked toward her.
“Where did you get that locket?”
“My mother gave it to me.”
“What was her name?”
“Sarah Reed.”
Margaret gripped the staircase railing.
The color disappeared from her face.
Daniel noticed.
“Mother?”
Margaret did not answer him.
She walked directly toward Emily.
“Open it.”
Emily hesitated.
The locket was the only thing her mother had left her.
Sarah died when Emily was sixteen.
Emily had worn it every day since the funeral.
“Please,” Margaret whispered.
Emily opened the silver locket.
Inside was a faded photograph of her mother as a young woman.
A man stood beside her.
His face had been partially damaged by water.
Margaret still recognized him.
She covered her mouth.
Daniel took the locket.
The man in the picture had the Hawthorne jaw.
The Hawthorne eyes.
And the same crooked smile Daniel remembered from childhood photographs.
“That is Uncle Adrian.”
Emily stared at him.
“I never knew my father.”
Margaret slowly faced Vanessa.
Understanding hardened her expression.
“You knew who Emily was.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel looked from Emily to the necklace inside the velvet box.
Then he saw something he had never noticed before.
The diamond necklace and Emily’s locket carried the same engraved symbol.
A small winged lion.
The private mark of the Hawthorne family trust.

Vanessa had not chosen Emily randomly.
She had framed the one woman whose identity could destroy the merger, the engagement and everything the Vale family intended to steal.
